3.55 gears or not?

help! 3.55 gears? I have recently purchased a 93 w/ 19k miles - it is much more responsive than my 95. the differential has a orange-ish type gasket sealer going around it that would almost appear as it was after market. can anyone confirm -can you see gasket sealer on your differential in a stock rear end? how can I tell if I bought this with 3.55's or an other than stock rear end. how much will I pay for installation?

If you go over to the morgue, there's a chart there telling you your speeds in each gear with different ratios. I had 3.55s put in along with a lightweight flywheel, cost $2K for both at DC. I would guess about a grand.

Get the rear jacked up with both rear tires off the ground, then rotate the tires one full turn, while at the same time looking at the pinion yoke/driveshaft, counting its rotation. I am assuming your Viper is one of the uber rare rear wheel drive models?

If you have 3:55.1 gears, the yoke will turn a 'scosh' more than 3 1/2 times, to every one full rotation of the tires. Ignore the front tires, as they should not be turning.

Now, if you have stock gearing, 3.07, the yoke will rotate a 'scosh' more then 3 times to every one rotation of the tire.

Sarcasm aside, this method has been used to the success and astonsishment of many math majors.

Enjoy!
