We just finished a mild head and cam package on my friend's 97 GTS.
Car has Champion heads(2.0/1.6), Heffner Cam, Balenger Headers,
3" Mopar exhaust, T&Ds, KN filter with smooth tubes, ported intake, and a tuned VEC2.
Car on a hot day dynoed last week 522/540 Tq SAE.
So we wanted to test it out against my Friend's 06 Z06, just to see how we measured up. The Z06 has a Vortex Ram air induction(sealed air box that picks up air from the bottom of the nose of the car), Stainless works long tubes, and stainless works full 3" exhaust with mufflers. Car was tuned on a Mustang dyno and did 515 rwhp, maybe less on a dyno jet, don't know.
He recently run a 600 rwhp KB corbra and pulled it easily from a 2nd gear roll on.
So we get to the spot to run the cars this weekend, I knew it was going to be a good run. I get behind the wheel , as my friend (owner of the viper was very nervous), and agreed to go from 50 mph 2nd gear roll.
Three honks and we go!
2nd and third was dead even, I hammered fourth with all I got, and to my surprise the Viper pulls the Z06 by 1-1/2 car by top of fourth gear. Everybody including myself expected the 06 to pull the GTS in 4th, but it was the other way around, incredible!.
We lined up again, but this time at 40 mph, since the 06 wanted a slower
2nd gear roll. Viper at 3000 rpms or so , not a good spot for me, but I had to give him what he wanted, after all it was a friendly run to compare the cars.
We hit it, and by top of third the 06 was 1/2 car ahead of the viper. I hammered "DA 4th", and the mighty fourth comes to the rescue, 1 car the viper ahead by top of 4th.
So there you have it, no doubt a Head and cam 06 will pull this viper, but do a head and cam viper with stryker heads, and I think the GTS will have the edge again.
I'll tell you, I have a new found respect for the pull of 4th gear on these Vipers.. DAMN! 4th is where is at!
