Interesting GEN II GTS build info...I never realized
I had spent years thinking about buying Vipers and admiring them before I made the decision to buy one. I always liked the BW GTS color combo, even though it was the only color combo I liked with stripes (and the GT2 of course being my favorite ). When I was in the market the BW Vipers seemed to be priced substantially higher and I was under the impression (mistakenly) that they were a rare color.
I have noticed a glutton of BW GTS's on the market lately (here, Ebay, m.org, other usual places) and the price seems to have come down on them. I started researching build info and came to realize that there were more BW GTS cars built than there were red ones
Build info
BW GTS = 2,128
Red GTS
Monotone = 1,538 Stripes = 499
Total red = 2,037
I just thought it was interesting and something I would share for those that didn't know since I never really thought about it until recently. I'm sure many of you already knew this info.
I ended up with a red GTS but still want a GT2 eventually
I agree. Maybe in '97 they built more BW's than reds, but overall? I find that very hard to believe. I think the reason the BW's were going for more money than other colors is that the BW color combo was the first color combo available on the GTS. And when people think of the GTS they think of that color combo. Plus they only had that color combo in '96 & '97 for the Gen 2's.
This data shows 2,128 Gen 2 Vipers in blue/white stripes. Only made in '96 & '97. It also shows a total of:
1174 red Gen 2 RT-10's
1921 red Gen GTS's 235 red ACR's
Total 3,330 red Gen 2's or 2,156 red Gen 2 GTS's.
So still slightly more GTS's were red, but overall there were a lot more red Vipers if you include the RT-10s.
The title of my thread denotes this is only GTS cars. To me comparing RT-10 and GTS's is like throwing SRT-10 in to the mix also. They are all different cars with different reasons for buying. I also did not count ACR's because to me they are a special edition in themselves.
The point was BW is no more rare than red in the GTS model. The build numbers were relatively the same. They tend to be more attractive among Viper collectors but the price has not been showing that lately.
It is not about rarity it is about supply and demand. B/W are not rare at all but more people want the them, so the price goes up. There is only 1 yellow with congac RT-10 but I do not think that makes it any more attractive. In the used market red will always be the cheapest color because they made them every year of Viper production.
I heard somewhere on the morg before that B&W was the second most common color combo, next to Red. I guess they were right. The only thing that sets the B&W apart in my eyes, is the fact that it is the debut color combo for the GTS.

Just thought it was interesting
I didn't intend any offense, and I did kind of finding it shocking myself when I added the numbers together that there were almost the same number of red and blue/white GTS's built. All the ACR's were GTS's from what I remember, and they are still GTS's no matter what add-ons there were to them. So I think they should be included in the number. Overall, when you think about all the Gen 1's, Gen 2's, and Gen 3's there seems to be one hell of a lot of red ones.

No offense taken by me at all just discussions on the color combo's I was kinda typing between other tasks and may have came across in a crappy manner. I'm not always as poignant as I should be
The ACR's were definitely GTS's I just didn't count them in the initial data because I was comparing numbers produced in terms of market value for myself. The ACR's command a higher price as we all expect.
From the sales I have seen and heard taking place lately it seems that the glutton of BW GTS's that hit the market may have hurt their value some. When I was looking for one it would have cost me $7K-$8K more to buy a comparable BW which I thought was insane (hence...why I bought a red one) . From what I have seen in the last 6-8 months that gap has closed down to less than $2K, if that. May be temporary...may not.
When collecting cars there is no doubt rarity plays into values. I didn't realize until digging through the numbers that BW GTS's were not as rare as I thought they may have been when compared to red GTS's.
