I am thinking of converting to a 4 speed automatic transmission for drag. What are my best options or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
My dad had RSI do one on his car. He was their learning curve for it. I am not sure which one he has. But it cost 25k, minus 5k for stock trade-in. RSI was never able to prevent the tranny from overheating. It wasnt their specialty and they tried to fix it when they werent equipped. They ended up sending us to a transmission shop, where the guy who runs it builds well-known drag transmissions. He re-did the transmission coolers (3 of them), then built a scoop to funnel air to it, and it still overheated. FInally the torque conversion specialist came by and asked how much torque we had. Told him. and he swapped the 9 inch TC for a 12.5 inch. Not only did it stop overheating, but it also pick up some acceleration.
In the end, an expensive learning curve, but the results are impressive. It is unbelievable how convenient it is to have cruising, but as for hauling ass it scares me. In dad's old gts, i have no problem going up to 150-180 and felt comfortable. In his auto/turbo srt, i dont like accelerating past 110-115. There is something about shifting that allows you to re-evaluate your position. In the auto it just keeps going and you never have time to adjust.
200-4R's all have the same internals with the GN difference being in the calibration of the valvebody, accumulators and governor. They also use a larger 2nd apply band servo(though the largest and hardest hitting servos are in a few very early model 200 non-lockups(yes they interchange)!I've put a few of these in GN's along with a little recalibration work to the valvebody.Kenny Bell was one of the first to put alot of power to the trans.

So why is it a 700-R4 and a 200-4R? That always screws me up.
I think it's either because it came out on a friday,or they named it after a big party(lots of booze)!
Not really sure!I believe it made it's appearance in 1982 and the 700-R4 a year later.Either way, they are both "4"speed autos that are "R"ear wheel drives!
I went the 700-R4 route in the 80's in a 67 Chevy II .I was Fairbank's guinea pig, because they would send me their "REV-LOCK"stall converter(just came out) and my car would split the weld completely(3 total).Gave up on them and got together with our converter guy and figured out a solution for a stall converter.Never fun when someone elses shit breaks on your car!
I believe the 200-R4 robs less HP ! Okay, time for me to shut -up!
700 r4's are junk. they are the predicesor to the 4l60e which I have destroyed many times. use anything but a 700r4. I blew a fully built 4l60 after a couple months. the car was only at a little over 600rwhp.

Fully built = what??? Twice of half built???
Please explain in detail!
