Weight of stock cast iron headers of the 96 + 97's ??
Does anyone here know what the exact weight of the stock cast iron headers of the 96-97 GTS's are ?? I'm assuming that going to an aftermarket tubular header will not only give a big boost in flow & performance (of course) but I'm curious as to the actually weight savings for 96's & 97's as well.... (i know on roe racing's site they adverstise the shipping weight for most of the aftermarket performance headers for gen II vipers being between 45-55lbs...wonder what the stock cast iron ones are?) Thanks.
I just replaced my 97 cast iron exhaust manifolds with later 01 stock tube headers. The difference in weight was 24 pounds (less, obviously.) I also cut out the cats and went with 2+1/2" s.s. straight pipes. The cats are 12 lbs a piece, while the straight pipe (replacement pipes) were 2 lbs a piece. Saved 20 lbs there too, for a total of 44 lbs savings, and a gain of 20-21 hp! Check out my previous thread and pics regarding the whole deal! Any questions; pm me... Chris

You don't recall what the exact weight of the 01' stock tube headers were by any chance do ya? I'd still be very curious to compare their weight to some of the aftermarket tube headers available.
Nothing scientific but I just weighted myself on our home scale. 184.5lbs. I then picked up a set of 01 OEM headers with Vband clamps on them. 205lbs.
I have these from a OEM stock exhaust we converted on my dad's 01. Cut apart the cats at the weld line, removed the guts, rewelded. Sure he could have saved weight by putting in straight pipes but I thought his idea of using the OEM cats but removing the guts was a great idea. Cost him nothing except lunch for a friend who rewelded.
So these are 20.5 lbs but I wouldn't trust my home scale for absolute accuracy.
I would really be interested in seeing a gen 2 dyno comparison with no other mods other than the 96 + 97 cast manifolds (initial test,) followed by replacement with the later stock tube headers (98 and up,) then aftermarket headers. You'd think one of the companies that produce aftermarket headers for the gen 2's would have done such a test to bolster interest and sales. Or maybe it's not enough of a difference between the later stock tube headers and aftermarket headers to show substancial gains for the money.....who knows? Any input?
I can't remember where I saw it, either here or the other site, but I thought it was a 8-9HP gain. I have heard by switching to Bellengers or B&B's it is 15+ for 96 - 97 vipers. I was shocked at how much the stock manifolds weighed over my bellengers. The stock manifolds are boat anchors.

Say does your dad want to sell those OE manifolds..?
Redflash, Sure. They have been sitting at my house for a few years. He has old Mopars and these are stainless so he thinks they will be worth 5K in 40 years but it won't take much to get rid of them now. They have the OEM band clamps and the exhaust connection is different from my 3 bolt ones on my 95 so you need to be careful on what exhaust you are mating them to. Send me your email address and I'll send some pics.
