If it's just on the outer lip/edge, do it yourself. I've done about 5 of my wheels now, and you can't even tell where they were rashed.
It's just aluminum. Sand down the rash with progressively finer grades of sandpaper (I even used a small file once to take down the worst part), then polish it with Mother's or something and no one will be the wiser. That area of the bead will now be polished only instead of clear coated-but you'd never tell it.
Be careful not to let the abrasive you use scratch the areas further in from the bead or you will be screwed. Round off the inside and outside edges of the bead when you're done to give it a bead look again. Just keep following the radius of the bead as you sand instead of toward the center and out again (unless necessary). Put some tape over the inner rim if you need to, to protect it. When you're done with the worst part, sand off some of the adjacent undamaged lip/edge so the low spot you just made isn't so obvious. I just kept sanding until the scratches were gone.
When I had my slicks put on one of the rims off my newly purchased Viper a few months ago, it had rash with jagged edges so bad you'd almost cut your hand if you weren't careful.. I told the guy not to seat the bead, and I'd be back after I was done with it.
He couldn't find where that long fugly rash was when I brought it back.
Wheels America Alloy Wheel Repair Home or wheel american if I didnt get the web address correct..119.99 they pick up and drop off. mount and dismount..powdercoat and paint
I sent all 4 of my wheel (all had curb rash when I bought it,) to Keystone wheel division in PA. They removed the clearcoat, fixed ALL the curb rash, scratches etc, repolished the entire rim(s), and re-clearcoat them. It came out great (even though I think the could have polished them up a bit better,) and even upon close inspection, you cannot tell where any of the damage was at all! Total cost was about $700 for all 4. If there is a Keystone near you anywhere, you can drop them off there, and they send them out to their wheel division in PA. No shipping charges. You can probably find them on the web......
Well, I have a bent HRE-VERY slight I need trued up. Can Wheel America do it? These are 547R Wheels and I think 2 or 3 piece, but anyhow as it spins on a balancer or the like, you can see a slight wobble. I DO driver HIGH speed and plan on breaking 200 MPH this year, so I want it right. Now at 130 the car vibrates and it feels dicked, so I want it right. Any input appreciated and thanks.
Wheels of America fixed one of my BBS rims as well as far as the rash went, but didn't get it perfectly straight. They do a nice job though and can't beat the price.
Here you go Plum. He is a mobile guy that basically does the wheels in his truck right in front of your house. They don't have a website, but here's the info:
Jersey Shore Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists Inc
Phone: (732) 988-8870
Ask for Steve M. to do the work for you. He may not be there any longer because when he came out to do the wheels, he was talking about quitting the job. He was a very nice guy though.
FYI I called that number and was referred to a local rep. The place was honest, reliable and showed up at my house for a free estimate. Although they recommended I just balance the tire with a new Hunter unit instead of fixing the rim as it was BARELY out, I give that place a 2 thumbs up!
