Help! <15 Oil Pres and now knocking

Hi, I have a 98 GTS and the oil pressure fluxuates between 15-20 normally and now it has began to drop to 0 then back upto 15. The oil and filter are new and the right amount of oil in it but now as of today, it started making a knock instantly. Very loud metal to metal sounding knock and 0 oil pressure. I'm stuck 880 miles away from home in a small town in WY and am wondering if anyone has any insight here? Is the pick up tube metal? Could it have come severed or come off and be knocking around down there? Any help is greatly appreciated fellas!

You might drain the oil and drop the pan for a quick look.

I guess I'll have it towed to a shop since she is sitting at a gas station right now. I think there are 500 people in this town though! Don't think anyone is going to know what to look for but we'll give it a try. I thought about taking the valve covers off and seeing if I dropped a valve or something.

Sounds like you are screwed if you drive it , flatbed it to a Viper tech and rent a car.

I'm in Evanston, WY zip 82930, about 80 miles from Salt Lake City. I've drove her from Dothan Alabama and she ran great the entire way until I started her today. Wierd, it didn't make any noises or run poorly, then today an instant ticking then knocking a couple sec later. I immediately shut her down and here I sit!

Maybe you should have had the low oil pressure checked out before taking it across the country..........

Pay the money to have it flatbeded home to your local viper tech that you know and trust. Doesn't sound good at all. Rent a car for the ride home and follow it! Let us know what happens and what the problem is......

If you pull the filter and cut it apart (there is a tool) you will get an indicator to the severity of the problem. ViperSpray was right, a car with 15-20 psi pressure (normal driving) should have been sitting.

Don't start it any more.

I did and was told it was ok... that it only needed a thin coat of oil on it and 20 psi was fine. Guess that wasn't true! I heard the pick up tube can crack and cause low oil sometimes? You heard of that? Or is it metal? I've been away from the family all week and am about to just say F it and leave it here. I need to get home and get ready for Christmass! Anyone want a 98 GTS with a knock? LOL

Depending on which side of Utah you're on, you might want to get ahold of "utahviper" from this board. He may be your best bet at the moment. To take a car with that kind of oil pressure was questionable at best. Who did you buy it from? I am from that part of Alabama and know most of the cars there.

Thanks, I'll try to PM him. Actually, my car was shipped to Alabama, Wolfe Motorcars by Memorial 1 Imports. Memorial basically stole my car and moved to Africa after selling about 20 other cars and not paying anyone for them. Took the money and ran you could say. So, after loosing my car for 7 months I tried to drive it home and all of this happens. Guess when it rains it pours! Atleast that is my luck. I think what ever is making the oil pressure so low finally gave out. I mean from what I hear, there is no oil pump per say on a viper and something else was causing this problem. I'm ignorant to the workings of a viper motor though. I've worked on many regular v8s but this car is out of my league.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Just get the car home and have it fixed. Don't drive it of course.

Thanks everyone... I walked to the corner store, bought a super cheap $8 socket set and pulled the valve covers. Under the drivers side I found a rocker arm almost completely unbolted and the push rod laying on it's side. After checking the rod, it was straight and there was no visable damage to the arm so I put them back together and tightend it up! Needless to say, she runs like a champ again! Lucky me! So the metal to metal was my pushrod hitting the valve covers metal lining it has in the middle there.

You were working with Bobby at Wolfe? He has had that 98 for a while, unless this is a different one. He had one about a year ago. Hope it works out and the quick fix gets you home

If you are smart the first thing to do is a oil change just in case metal is floating around due to pushrod banging around.

Glad you found what was wrong..but I'm concerned about your normal oil pressure only being between 15-20psi. That's way low isn't it? Unless maybe you're idling at 500rpm..

Still seems low 2 me.
