Illinois Emissions Testing

Hi,

I just recently bought a 94 Viper a month ago, and I have to take it into emissions relatively soon. I was wondering if anyone here is from Illinois (or similiar state that has to do emissions testing) and has/had to do the same? What kind of tests do they do? I'm concerned about how they will do the exhaust test since it is a side exhaust. And since its not ODB II they just can't hook it up directly to the computer and get the stats. Anyone got some insight on this? Thanks in advance!

I don't know 100% for sure but they will just stick the exhaust probe in the side like they would for a car with a rear exhaust. Since you aren't a 96 or newer with OBDII they will probably put your car on the tread mill or rollers (like a dyno). That is the part that will really suck. Most of the people that work a the test facility can't drive stick for anything. I don't think they will even connect anything to your computer port. See if you have any relatives or friends in a different part of IL close to you where they don't test emissions and register the car at that address if you can. Then you don't have to worry about it. I live in IN and believe the testing in IL is about the same. Hope this helps.

Yeah I wasn't sure about the rollers either. But from prior experience with my 94 Mustang, I can only recall an exhaust test, and not needing to go on the rollers (actually I'm not positive, I forget, but I think I may have and only needed to go up to 30mph, before they told me to stop... so many cars I've tested, I forget which is which). I'm just not sure how the exhaust test will work, I don't want them scratching any paint. I'm not too worried about the rollers because they atleast allow you to do it yourself instead of them doing it. But if anyone has more insight on the exhaust I would be interested in knowing.

PS: registering the vehicle under someone else is out-of-the-question since I don't have relatives living elsewhere
