I was racing my '97, done a lot of R&D and work re using my OE brakes, as can't aford to go 18" rims and Daves big brakes yet... (this is what works for me: Cone cool ducting, Porsche air deflectors, Roe Ti pistons, SRF fluid, PF 01 pads, 2-piece aero-rotors, wheel-well cut outs, rear Tom 40mm caliper mod) anyway...highspeed braking..and unfortunatly still running with race damaged bent frame putting camber/caster out on front wheel, causing uneven brake forces through fronts...heat melted front ball-joint rubbers, grease ignited...flames were leaping from wheel-well; I've never moved so damn fast to put out fire, YIKES, not nice seeing my Beloved on fire, grabbed drinks bottle off bystander to pour on flames!
Until I can save the readies to have my frame jigged out, at what temp does grease ignite, and would synthetic grease withstand higher temps pre-ignition? I'm going to replace ball-j boots and make up heat shields for them, would this maybe enough to get me by? I don't want to be a firewoman again! :flame: :flame:
Thanks for help, and yeah I was lucky this time! Phew!
Got new boots to go on, and Janni is very kindly sending me some shields that her and Henry developed and ran out on the track, so I should soon be sorted.
Frog, sorry I never got any pics, strangly enough when I saw my wheel-well on fire, panic was to put flames out, not try to find a camera for a photograph opportunity! Will see if I can find you some other pic that will forgive me for my blunder there!
Pics just for Froggy from this summers racing. Next year I'm having to take a year out of racing, to fix car and sort debts!
Neil took this pic, look carefully and check out glowing red front rotors:
I got to 190 mph in such a haste I had time on my hands to cruise and take a photo, before getting on those brakes!
I'm not big blessed with the melons, but keep cool and try to save heat soak to Viper and gas where poss, never notice...but guys are too funny where their gaze is at!
First off, although your bent frame probably contributed, this isn't uncommon even for a straight frame car, so just fixing the frame probably won't solve it anyway.
What you need is what Janni is sending you - and that is heat sheilds to protect all the rubber boots in the suspension. Another thing to do is learn from Tom (I think he knows how to do it) how to rebuild the calipers with new boots, cause those will get cooked as well.
And for god's sake - at least put in a hand held fire extinguisher on the floor under your feet! It was one of the first things I added when I started tracking.
Nadine-
I'll get those heat shields out this weekend - thanks for the addy. I'll label them as to where they go - front upper, lower, tie rod end and same for rears. Attach with cable ties - you should be good to go.
And - I LOVE the pic. Wouldn't actually want any of the blokes to help now would ya?

Cool pics Naughty! Are you pushing your car in your bra? No wonder the dudes are gawking. I didn't see where you stated you didn't have a fire extinguisher in your car, but I agree with Mark about having one. I have had one in the last 6 cars I owned since I drove them hard and always wanted to be repared. I was in a friends car one day and saw a car starting to catch on fire in a parking lot. Had I been in one of my cars, I could have helped the guy out....
