New intake install, gains?

I just got the K&N dual cone intake with smooth tubes, and molded housing, I am sure you guys know the one. Looks like a quality piece. I have headers and exhaust, what kind of HP gains do you think it will produce? This is on e a low milage Gen I.

I posted a dyno of adding edelbrocks and a full roe exhaust on a gen 1. The original dyno numbers on the sheet where a gen 1 with only upgrade being k&n dual cones. :

I thought the initial K&N airbox user dyno/strip etc results ended up showing it essentially added zero HP when it first came out.. just before it died an early death

FWIW, I remember trying short K&N filters clamped directly onto the throttle bodies on my Gen 1, and seeing no gain in back to back runs at the strip.. might have been due to an increase in air temp as I was picking up engine compartment air, but could've meant a lot of things..

Died an early death? This part is not that old at all, maybe they revised it? Clamping a cone right onto the throttle body?? Thats not an optimum setup, it probably lost you HP.

The dyno posted above (i just found it) shows about 21hp. Thats pretty good.

I have the same air box on my 95 and have had it on for about 2 years now. I would be really surprised if you picked up 5 HP from it and highly doubt you will get 21 HP from it.

While it is a descent design in the fact that it shields hot engine air with the carbon fiber housing, it could have been much better. The cheap plastic intake tubes are to small and curved, should have been larger and a polished aluminum hard pipes, especially for the price.

I bought for it for an aesthetic mod personally.

I'm as big a fan of bolt on HP as anyone. It just seems like the K&N airbox thing was over in less than a month.. Ever really hear about them anymore?

While I think of it, I had occasion recently to test airflow through a Gen2 airbox with the air flowing backwards (it was the only option given at the time..!) through the airbox on a major company's expensive flow equipment, and instrumentation indicated that at 400cfm the driver's side of the airbox was flowing about half what the pass side was flowing. (out the front of the airbox)

We were puzzled until we noticed that the exit tubes from the airbox are not centered behind the rain dam. The passenger side exit tube is oriented a little more outboard than the driver's side. With the rain dam blocking less of the flow on the pass side than on the driver's side.

I've been hesitant to post about it since the flow was coming IN thru the airbox's exit tubes ....how I ended up testing in reverse is a long story.. but it may add to the notion of cutting out one's rain dam. Since normal flow would also find the driver's side being obstructed by the rain dam more than the passenger side.

The test CFM was way low, and in the wrong direction..so it's all but useless, but I thought I'd put it in print anyway

Stupid sounding; but true
