Rough running Viper, need ideas...

I just installed a 510 stroker motor in my '97 with a Vec2 to help tune everything. I have a couple of odd problems, though.

1) At part throttle driving, either while cruising or just pulling away from a stoplight, the car will buck and lurch.

2) If I do a full-throttle blast sometimes the car seems like it goes into a "limp-mode" or something. It has no power, idles like it's a stock car, etc. There is no check engine light or anything. Usually when this happens, I have to turn the car off and turn it back on to get it running right again.

The car has new Mopar plugs, fuel filter and Mopar oxygen sensors. I thought it may have been a TPS problem, but I put on a new one today to test out and the problem is still there.

I can provide detailed info. about the engine combination if needed.

Thanks!!

You may need to re-synch your throttle bodies to get rid of the bucking and lurching.

Do you have a 708 cam in the car or does the stroker package put a different aftermarket cam? If the cam has more lift than stock, you may need a PCM reflash to compensate for the change in the MAP sensor values. I have been going through similar issues since I changed my cam. West Coast Viper re-flashed my PCM and it helped a lot.

I messed around with my throttle bodies this evening. I had the drivers side tb opening just before the passenger side, but not enough, I guess. I adjusted it more and this helped out a lot.

I have a VEC2 for tuning. The cam in the engine isn't stock. I'm not sure of the specs, but it's pretty hairy.

I tried to do another wot run this evening and just a second or 2 after going wot, the car went into that limp-mode type thing. The car just fell on its face and wouldn't make any power. It happened right by home, so I got the car home ok.

On the dyno it was at about 11.9-12.0:1 a/f ratio. It did it the other night after I did a wot run getting on the freeway. I rolled into the throttle in 3rd then hit 4th. I slowed back down and put it in 5th and then into 6th to cruise home and then it happened again.

On Friday night I was going to race my 2 friends and just as I went into 2nd gear, the car did it again.

It's pretty aggrivating.

I have the Dynojet WinPep file and the VEC file that I can email if anyone wants to take a look at it. I know that there is some work to be done on the tune because I'm new at it. The car made 580 rwhp and 585 rwtq. I think with a more "polished" tune it should make somewhere in the low 600's.

Perhaps you have a bad valve?

Is your PCM stock?

One last thing that came to mind is either a bad fuel pump/pressure regulator and/or not enough fuel pressure. There was a discussion on the board a while back about how much rwhp the stock fuel system can handle. It seems you may be past what the stock system can handle.

If you want to check your fuel pressure, go to Advance auto parts and buy a fuel pressure tester. There is a shrader valve on the passenger side of the intake. When I suspected my fuel system was acting up a while back, I removed the cowl, hooked up the tester to the shrader valve and duct taped the gauge to my windshield so that I could monitor it while driving. It may look a little ghetto, but it works. You will be able to monitor the fuel pressure during WOT and either confirm or disregard the fuel system as being the problem. The tester costs about $40.00, and when you are done simply remove it and put everything back together.

Keep us posted.

BTW, how far did you back the set screw on the throttle bodies? I am in the process of trying this and was unsure how much lead to give the drivers throttle body.

Thanks.

The distance from the tip of the set screw with the jamb nut to the passenger side throttle body arm is about the thickness of a dime.
