Tips on Head Porting, best place of intake

to take out material. My Heads are off and a great time to do more work on them.

So, what would be the best place to target. It seems that the curve of the intake port is restrictive, how sensitive is the curvey area?

Anyone with measurements to share?

Thanks

and i'll do the heads for ya. You can also charge him and keep the interest for the last 7 months.

Man, these are pretty clean heads. Just grind to match gaskets and block and sand down any rough spots.

If someone who knows what they were doing already ported them, why would you go in there intent on making improvements based on guesswork or input from a forum?

You'll probably do more harm than good.

Go to someone with a flowbench and experience.

80% of a port job is done within the first 1/2" of the valve.

Thanks for the input guys, however i would like to know if the side of the intake port wich curves is a safe place to take out material.

The heads have been ported well, im just looking for an excuse to try and improve.

Garth, opening a shop is very cool

I have always wanted to do that for the fun of it. I think it would be a great stress reliever

I know someone that has a viper head that was cut into a dozen pieces to show where material could be taken out of. I have looked at it multiple times. However I am sure that the people that have it in their pocession will not give you any pointers.

Wouldn't you be further ahead port matching your intake?

Probably not, most of the restriction is near the valve. Although, this is going to be done by any porter worth a shit anyway.

Porting with FI is a little different than with NA. I've found that when porting FI heads opening everything up, smoothing, and making the volume larger seems to work very well. The area of concern though is how far can you go before you risk major damage...

The biggest restriction in a set of unmolested heads will be right at the valve and short turn radius area. After attention has been put to that area you can only make the intake volume so large before you either run out of room, or you hit a wall to where the valve diameter itself is the bottleneck.

I guess what I meant wasn't that port matching is better than an actual head porting and polishing on a flow bench, but that if one was to do something at home that was safe and cheap. Wouldn't port matching be a safe improvement?

Sure it would, but as DD said... the area that needs the most attention (for real gains to be made) is the area just above the valve.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO PORT THEM YOURSELF THEN HERE ARE SOME SECRETS FROM THE PROS, JUST DONT TELL ANYONE:

1. USE SOME NICE CORN COBS AND A DIE GRINDER OR CORDLESS DRILL.

2. FOR BEST FLOW, USE INDIAN CORN IF YOU CAN GET IT.
