Road trip suggestions from California to Georgia ?

Any input ?

Road trip driving a Viper from Los Angeles area to Georgia.

Options: Hwy 40 through Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, 2130 miles, 30:40 hrs.
OR
Hwy 15 then 70 through Las Vegas, Grand Junction, Vail, Denver, Topeka, Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville, 2295 miles, 33:59 hrs.

I have never driven the desert or the big mountains so both would be new to me. Could possibly do minimum stops or maybe take some more time to spend a night or two at interesting stops. How fast can you run Hwy 40 ? Tickets ?

i have done those drives before. i would recommend option 2. your first option is very boring scenery, not that the second part of option 2 isn't. flying through grand junction to denver is a blast. i did it in my viper and my gsxr1000.

but damn, i always get a ticket going north on 15 in utah. both times i drove my viper through there about 150-200 miles from vegas, i got nailed. once while driving to utah vipers house, i got nailed for doing 5 miles over the speed limit. 75mph in a 70 zone...luckily those are disposable charity donations to the utah state police fund.

I have run the I40 route from NC and GA to Los Angeles about 12 times roundtrip and have always been able to do 10mph over with no tickets. Sometimes even faster depending on the how flow of traffic is and how fast the truckers are running at the time. The truckers seem to set the speed to me, as they haul some ass down the interstates. If they are doing 10 over then I will do a little more to keep from having to travel behind them. On I40the good thing is it is fairly flat the whole way, so your V1(or other detector) will pick up the troopers at a good distance for you to slow down in time.

Tony,

Why are you driving? For the fun of it/experience? By the time you pay for gas, food, drink and any hotels/motels you will have paid for a roundtrip ticket. I always fly unless a very compelling reason exists (i.e. picking up a car to drive home).

I've driven from LA to ATL before but I'm a fair weather driver I took the southern route. I10 to I20 all the way into Atlanta. Its about 2218 miles. The speed limit if you're towing a trailer is 55 in CA, 75 through AZ, 75 in NM, 70 during the day and 65 at night in TX, and 70 the rest of the way through LA, AL, and GA.

The best way to stay sane is to sand bag a little and just estimate a worst case scenario of an average of 60 mph. This way you always feel like you're "ahead of schedule" and making good time.

Eddie

Believe me, they are worth the cash.....nothing like it unless you spend two to three times the money.
