Smile Wheel Hop

Hi All, new to the site. Got the SNKBYT name from AC Cobra I had now it just makes sense to continue to my 99 RT10 (same on plates) Black on black. Some interesting posts. I bought the car last June in CA and shipped it to Anchorage. It has low miles. But haven't driven it much. I keep seeing these Viper pictures doing burn outs. Mine starts to wheel hop bad when I start the tires spinning then I back off til they don't. Has Pilots. How do you get the wheels to quit hopping on burn outs??? On the Cobra I had 4 links same as my other street rods. Is there a kit or do you just burn through it???

Common ailment. Try stiffening the rebound on rear shocks. I had the same problem and went 1 3/4 turns out from full stiff, but have not completed the car so can not guarantee it will work. Based on past posts, it has made a difference for many (that and fresh tires). The posts also have directions for doing the adjustment if you are a DIY'er. Check them out. Good luck!

Are you in Anchorage Alaska?? I just got my RT/10 shipped to Anchorage too. I have the same axel hop problem on my black Caddy CTS-V. Maybe you have seen it around town. Only one here. Usually have the rear end sideways or the tires spinning :-)

We shoud met up and chat.

Dave

You are in Anchorage? What a coincidence...I am in Denver and my GTS used to have a severe case of wheel hop.

Agreed on the shocks. Do you happen to know how old the rear tires are? I would replace those as well.

Even my Kumhos will hop in second when it's cold out. I'm not sure what the solution is, other than avoiding getting on it in cold weather.

I was thinking this is a contributing factor to my hop. My tires have less then 5k miles on them, they are the original tires from '97

Yeah, once the rubber on the tire gets hard, they are pretty much useless.

New Kumhos help, the 3:55 rear gear seemed to help also.

Might not be the right rational, but was hoping to avoid buying new tires for the stock 17" wheels and just get a whole new wheel/tire combo. I may have to rethink that plan.

Hostile< I don't know where You get your Info but it's totally whacked about the tire age and tire size. Been in the car repair business 32 yrs and the best answer so far was loosening the shocks. Thats not totally correct either. What has to happen is to get the A arms to be rigid and not move or rotate. I'm going to try and tighten my shocks and find hard poly bushings for A arms. The tires have NOTHING to do with it!!! Hard old tires spin and soft hook up. But either if they spin will hop when the suspension is to soft or allow the A arms to flex. Look at traction bars on leaf springs they stop the Differential from twisting back and forth. IE: wheel hop. When I did this post I thought maybe there was a kit to keep the A arms from rotating which is what's needed and I thought I'd get some useful info. Sounds like I might have a new design in progress for Vipers.

Man, Hostile you are Hostile, Also off track. Been repairing cars 32 yrs and suspension problems. My post was to see if there was a kit available for Viper wheel hop. Sounds like real common. The Tires, hardness or size, has nothing to do with the problem. If you were old enough you'd remember traction bars on leaf springs. They were there to stiffen up the back and forth twist of the rear end (hop). Even soft new tires will spin and hop same as old hard tires. Only the soft will get more forward movement of the car or traction. What has to happen for HOP is to stop the rocking of the A arms by either hard bushings, stiifer shocks, solid anchor points or a track rod. Something has to keep A arms from rotating or wrapping like old leaf springs did. Just thought I would post the question to see what was available and I got my answer. Sounds like a new product and patent may be in the works.

Yea, the Cadillac CTS-V has the axel hop problem bad, I took it to GM, the changed the bushings out...and wham-oh all better.

The guys on LS1Tech were telling me to change the tires (it comes with Z rated run flats), so I did...wasted 1000 bucks... new tires (Pilots) didnt help at all.
