your thoughts about buying a salvaged titled viper?
Im looking at a 97 GTS that is was spun and the left rear wheel/quarter pannel was damaged and replaced. The car has like 2x,000 miles on it and its a blue/white car. What are your impressions about buying a car with a salvaged title?
If you get it for less then $30K, you will NOT lose money, but it won't sell as easily assuming you're honest with the description. Just like anything else, you have to find the right buyer.
wisconsin, its a blue/white with 20k or so miles and I figured it would be in the low 30's, he wants 42k for it, lol. Paolo also said not to touch a salvaged car with a 10 foot pole
Your choice really.... keep in mind the salvaged title won't sell like a clear when you relist and you MAY need to put a few more grand into it after obtaining it. I'd seriously consider a wrecked salvage... stay AWAY from the flood salvage cars! Good luck.
My first Vipe was a salvage car. ITs a great way to get into the car for short money. I am in the car business so any future issues didnt bother me. I bought my first 98 GTS for under 30 and sold it to a friend for just under 40. He was very familiar with the car and new its history. He is in the car biz as well.
If you can get one in the low 30's its a great way to see if you really like the viper. Once you get comfortable in the car and decide you are hooked, replace it with a newer one and sell the salvage one to someone else looking for a first car. If you buy it right, you cannot go wrong.
Well maybe I should respond since he is talking about my car. I have had 6 salvage vipers and now fixing the 7th. In my opinion it is the only way to buy one but a person does have to be careful. I have seen some very bad jobs on repairs and I would not ever own one of these cars. Now lets get to the real deal on buying a used viper. 1st you get what you pay for. If you spend 30 grand on a salvage B&W gts you will more than likely get a POS. 2nd A very large percent of vipers have been wrecked and have no history. I fixed a 2000 mile RT-10 for a club member who paid out of his pocket with allot worse damage then mine and there is no history to be found of an accident. A salvage car is not for everyone but if you like saving a few bucks and find a good one there is nothing wrong with it. Just my .02
knowing what i know now id buy one. basically i see it if you are gonna drive it or mod it then go for it. but knowing your NOT gonna be able to sell it easily and might take a bit of a hurting on the sale if ya do. but if ya know it going in, who cares.
i bought mine with 9100 miles on it and now have over 43k. its not worth much more than if it was salvaged i think.
get a good deal on the car and make double sure to have it checked out real good by at least one good tech.
More grist for the mill: to decide on buying a salvage, I'd think you'd want to know as much as possible about the damage that got it totalled. Was the frame bent? If so, was it repaired properly (on a jig - they're kind of rare.) Did the airbags deploy? (Usually a bad sign).
On the plus side, if the car had an off-road excursion, maybe damaged the fascia and cracked the hood, you're looking at more than 25K in repairs, and on a nineties car, the adjuster will "total it." Someone picks up that car, repairs the damage, and sells it - but it's still a salvage title. Well, what's the value of that car? Certainly more than 30K (for a Gen II). So the salvage game depends on how much and how reliable info you can get on the car.

Mine is salvaged and I can't complain one bit. It still has the same hood and front end from it's accident. I am thinking someone wanted to get out of it in my case.
