Shocking, true (viper) story. MUST READ

Ok, so I decided to run out today and pick up a sponge and some quick detailer in preparation for the photo shoot this saturday at VIR. I run out to pep boys in the viper.....went inside and bought them. I come back out, start up the car and I'm about to take the emergency brake off and ...............................the Passenger side AIRBAG ******* deploys for absolutely no reason. At first i'm saying, what in the hell just happened, did someone just shoot a cannon at me. I get out of the car, mainly because i'm a little freaked out and it also smelled like crap. Some people who heard it come over and are just as stunned as i am. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm calling dodge now to see what they can do about it or I might have to get a lawyer. I drove it home because its only 8 miles away and I didn't want to have it towed to the local dealer cause I dont even know if they have worked on one before.

On a side note, while I was standing outside the car stunned, I still had two guys come up and ask what year it was cause they thought it was in such great shape, even though the airbag was hanging out.

Yeah, that would have hurt. DRiving home, I had my body and head as far back as possible in case the other one went off!! I feel like a stuntman right now. It looks like Dodge is going to take care of it and they know I was supposed to take the car down to the calendar thing this weekend so they are going to try and have it done before then. Not the way I envisioned my day starting however

I haven't noticed a turn off switch for the airbags on my 97. Did that start in 99?

Yes. 99 was the first year of the switch. That's why I asked the year because I was concerned about a faulty switch.

edit: correction it was 98. - rep for me.

Is your car covered any kind of maxcare warranty or did Dodge just pony up and said they will fix it? Man, I bet thats gonna take awhile to clean out the inside with all that dust! Good luck, man............I'm gonna think about that every time I disengage my parking brake now

It isn't a definate that Dodge will cover it. I dropped it off at the dealer. Dodge Coporate called that dealer and they have a district manager or an inspector coming to check out the car. You can clearly tell it wasn't in an accident, but I guess they still need some big wig to see it. The service guys at the dealer seemed just as dumbfounded. I think it really helped that I mentioned that I'm supposed to go to a photoshoot this weekend. I think it bumped it to #1 on their priority list!

Yes, the smell is still there, but I had the windows down and both doors open for a while to let it air out right after it happened and kept the windows down after that. I'm not counting on it being ready before saturday morning, but it would be nice if they get to it by then. Coporate is going to have a problem on their hands if they decide to deny fixing it. If I was driving when that happened, there could have been fatalities, so they are actually getting out pretty lucky just taking care of the airbag.

Oh, and no, its not covered under any kind of warrany, but it only has 15k miles, and stuff like that shouldn't happen period, but especially at that low of mileage.

Thats crazy. The only story somewhat like this that I have heard was an airbag deploying from driving over a pothole, but this is extremely odd.

If my air bag on the passenger side goes out a DVD/TV screen is going in that spot. Hope they fix your car or atleast get to the bottom of what caused it.
