DEXRON III for tranny fluid??

I just drained the tranny and getting ready to put fresh fluid in. The service manual calls fro Dexron III. The fluid that I just drained out of the tranny doesn't look anything like Dexron III nor does it even smell like it. Did someone put something different than Dexron in this ? Its' a 98 RT with 11,000 miles on it. The fluid that came out is a dark gray color. Could it be Castrol Syntech? what color is Castrol? Can I still put Dexron III back in it? This is the only fluid I have on hand at the moment and the original fluid I drained into a pan that had motor oil in it so its contaminated or otherwise I could have put the fluid back in. I know there all sorts of exotic synthetic fluids out there on the market so I'm wondering compatability issues with the residual stuff thats still in the tranny and this Dexron III I have.

Update: After a little research (I love Google), I see there must have been a bulletin come out about 98 and up Vipers switching to the Castrol Syntorque to quiet down the neutral gear rattle. Makes sense this is what was in the car because it did have the consistency, look and smell of gear oil.
