Question ...
Street racing from 50-60 mph are you guys hittiing it in 2nd or 3rd gear.
New to the car, had a 6 speed vette for 5 years so the difference from the 3.42 gears to the 3.07's is taking some getting used to.
In the vette at around 50, I would dump it to 2nd and the car was gonnne..
Now with the Viper, I've messed with it a bit ( less than a month seat time ) and not sure which works best for this car...
2nd FOR SURE! Redline in 1'st is about 55-58 MPH. One could argue that starting in 1'st at 50MPH might be even better, but the time for the 1-2 shift would make you lose too much time to equal the benefit. You would only be able to utilize 1'st gear for a split second. That being said, from a 35-40MPH roll I think 1'st would be a better choice than 2nd. That is if you can shift QUICKLY, which many people can't. (** See Gary J. 1/4 video for example of quick shifting.)
Unless you are spotting the guy some slack, I'd use 2nd at that speed.
Beautiful !
Thanks guys...
Will have to toy with it and get used to it, totally different animal to shift than the vette... Vette was much quicker shifts, as opposed to the viper holding each gear a little longer....
When I'd throw it in 2nd w the vette I'd get a chirp around 55, with the viper, I'm sure they'll break loose and again in 3rd...
Woodyz, I took mine out tonight with my daughter. (Being 18, I think she liked all the attention). But anyway ...
I changed lanes between cars running about 50mph. I downshifted to 2nd and nailed it, and it did get a little squirrely going from one lane to the other. But it felt awesome and completely controlled.
They are different animals than Vettes. Learn as you go, and pay attention!

They are most certainly different animals than the vettes, I love it, and respect it, but I ( so far ) found the vette to be much easier to control and drive well. I KNOW when I learn how to really control this beast it will dominate allllll but it's hard to learn the shift points, to control the wheel hop and how long to hold the rpms prior to shifiting.... Any veterans out there with experience knowing what I'm saying any feedback is much appreciated.
The best way is to go out there and learn what the car can do. People can tell you anything but you need to see for yourself and make those decisions.
If you are in 3rd you are not going to have full potential as opposed to 2nd.
That wheelhop is a bitch. I've only driven mine less than 100 miles, and I've found that rolling into the throttle aggressively works well. Nailing it creates chaos it seems!
Vettes are easier to exploit, especially if you are used to them. But as a more capable car, I would expect the Viper to be a bit harder to tame. It makes it all the more fun.
Yes the wheel hop/traction loss is a bitch.. The real answer is not to floor it unless it's warm enough out to get traction..
It's not like other cars (vette) it's harder to control partially because it's just so fast.. I have driven it about 700 miles and the only times I have accelerated up to 110 in it it's almost hard to control the cars stability with the massive acceleration.. I think it's a case of the car being just wayyy faster than anything else i have ever driven..
