The first couple (2 to maybe 3) of heat cycles rock. Then, they fall off fairly linear. We usually use ours about 10 heat cycles which equates to be about one race weekend - i.e. we qualify on new rubber, race 2X and then those tires get used for practice the next weekend.
After that, there's plenty of rubber left, but they are significantly slower. Not sure about tire softening compounds, but that might help.

I'm looking to just track them for fun and save my street tires. I've got 8 days on my Pilot Sports...they are shot even with a ton of tread.
I've an extra set of rims I was thinking of just throwing on the slicks and using them for HPDE. Just want to be safe and was unsure if after weekend I'd run a risk of them being toast. If they have 80%-90% in them after a few events I think I'd still be happy.

theyre not like street tire.. jt means that they get slick and not as grippy... they wont explode all of a sudden.
you can run em til they cord.. and that mostly depends on your alignment.
After that, there's plenty of rubber left, but they are significantly slower and we give them to Chuck who proceeds to shape them from round to octagonal.
Are they always better than a street tire or is there a cross over point where a new Pilot sport is faster?
That's a very good question. Unfortunately by the time they get to that point mine sound like somebody clothespinned a playing card in the spokes, the cause of which I'm sure reduces performance.
I would go with the shaved Toyo RA-1's. It's the same tire being used on the Speed World Challenge cars. They will last longer than the Hoosiers and will not go away as fast.

I just bought a set of Hoosiers for $300. I'll try the Toyo's next.
