drag radials

I want to know what type of drag radial tires people are running on the back of their vipers at the strip.

We have local races that are actually held at an airport runway, so the track won't bite like a regular strip will, but I want something that will allow me to have a good launch. Street tires just won't cut it there, so I need something to grab in that condition.

All of the other cars seem to be running bfg drag radials, but I cannot find anything in a viper size.

I will look into new rims to mount tires if they do not make something to fit on a stock size viper rim, but the setup has to be sreet legal, so no slicks are allowed.

Thanks in advance for everyones help.

Re: drag radials

At V-10 Nats, I saw mostly M/T Streets and E/T Drag Radials. I believe that we ran M/T E/T Drags. I don't remember seeing any BF Goodrichs, but there might have been some there.

Re: drag radials

I don't remember as we just borrowed the slicks from one of the guys we eliminated in the first round. We figured the clutch was on the way out, why not see what we can run. I think they were 15" by 11.5, but I could be off.

I am willing to buy rims and tires if I could have some recommendations. I do not want to just pick out some wheels and tires, I figured there must be some tried and true set ups that people are using.

Like I said before, I am looking for drag radials since some of the events i will be going to require street legal tires, so standard slicks will not work.

I obviously have never used drag radials before, so i am just hoping someone can recommend a pace for me to buy some that will fit the stock rims or recommend somewhere for me to buy a wheel and tire package that will just be bolt on. This way I will know everything should fit properly without any problems.

Oh, I almost forgot, I am running a Gen 1 with the factory 17" wheels. If someone makes a drag radial to fit this that would be great. If not, can I use a set of the 18" wheels off of a gen 2? Do they make drag radials for them?

Re: drag radials

Your choices for a DOT tire are:

Mickey Thompson Street ET (bias plys) 26 X 10 X 16 (need to change fronts)

Mickey Thompson ET Street Drag radials available in 16 and 17

BFG's, I believe they are 3.45 X 18

I have a set of the bias plys for sale.

For Zelienople, just use some BFG's or Kumho's. Try to find some used 18" Gen2 wheels to replace your Gen1's.

Re: drag radials

Since you have the Gen1 I would keep the 17's or go to a 16 inch wheel. This will give you more sidewall making the tires more compliant and will hook better that the smaller sidewall tires like the 18's.

That said I have a set of 18's and once I wore them down they hook really good. On a track I can get 1.5 60 foots easily. I have only run the BFG 345/30/18, but I have seen many run the smaller wheel drag radial and launch their cars hard.

When Chads car was in Memphis at the Pump gas drags it had 15 inch drag radials on it and I would say it left pretty good.

Re: drag radials

Wow! I wasn't aware a 15" rim would clear the rear calipers on an ABS car. I learn something new everyday.

Thanks J Dawg.

I know the fronts were spaced out(at that race) to clear the calipers, but they were gonna make a set that would fit in the wheelwell.

Dont know what kinda brake setup is on the rear of the car, but when I had my calipers grinded(on my 01) a little it left quite a bit of room even with the 16's on the car.
