As long as spring movement and the shock travel compliment each other...cutting springs is really not that hateful. Just make sure if the spring had/has a flat end...you re-machine the spring flat so it seats properly.
Where people screw up is having shocks that don't match up with the new spring rates. (aka..rice)
Ideally, your spring should be matched to your shock damper settings. When you do increase your spring rate, you should also (normally) increase your rebound damping.
