I just purchased a bone stock 1998 GTS and I'm looking to start my modifications to it. It did 414/449 with only a K&N drop in filter. I think it still needs to be broken in. It seems to get stronger every day I beat on it.
I already have a 701 rwhp Supra in the garage, so I'm only looking to get around 550 rwhp or so out of the Viper on pump gas. Just enough to make it more fun on the street.
The cost of headers/exhaust is brutal for these things. Close to $3000 and only a gain of around 30 rwhp or so.
So here's my question: What would be the best expenditure of funds to get the most hp/dollar, NOT INCLUDING NOS? Never been a big fan of the spray.
1. I believe can get headers/exhaust/high flow cats/roller rockers for around $4000.
2. I believe I can get head work for around $2650 or so. Not sure if I need a cam or not. The one in this '98 seems pretty rowdy. I would assume if I need a cam, the total price would again be around $4000.
3. I can get the Roe Racing blower with probably up to an 8 psi pulley for around $7000.
What are the HP gains from each of these packages? Which one is the best value for a starter package? We all know that once you start, you don't stop, but I just want to throw a few grand at the Viper to get it started and I'd like to see the maximum return on my initial investment.
I know that most of the guys that use a blower swear by them, and there are used Roe units that show up from time to time. I would also say that because you have a 708 cam (ask Jerry), you will get more results from exhaust mods than the newer (post 1999) Vipers. Some claim 50 RWHP from just exhaust.
And, Mr. Bravo, VERY good post for a rookie, including the visual of your beautiful car. Cough up a few bucks as a site supporter and you will go far. :thumb:
Send me the chick in that picture, and I'll help you unlock the horsepower secrets hidden deep inside your car. I'll also unlock the secrets hidden sorta deep inside her.
i wouldnt do the sc, or the heads/cam without the exhaust mods first so...do the exhaust mods first, plus the sound quality improvement is priceless. if your checkbook allows it; do it all, a Greg Good heads/cam package with a well tuned roe sc will be devestating and will make that supra in your garage be all but forgotten

There was a local guy who did absolutely nothing to his car but the Roe S/C and picked up a little over 100 rwhp on a 5 psi pulley. No headers, no exhaust, no nothing.
That was why that sounded so appealing.
How much can be gained by just doing a head package, and who does the best job? Would I still need a cam, or can I just use the 708? What's the typical cost for a good head or head/cam package?
Ultimately, I'd love to do the head/cam and blower. But I've only had the thing for about 5 days, so I'm only willing to throw a few grand at it to start. That's why I'd like to get the most hp for the least amount of money for my first round of mods.
I gained about 100rwhp by just adding heads/cam and a slightly ported and polished intake, it still has some more left in it to tune. I do have the other mods in my sig too. I am making 541rwhp now, and in this cool weather, it feels like the nitrous is on all the time .
Johnny, the right cam can give 25-30rwhp with a good set of heads. I wanted to get the 708 cam because of the price, but I was told I would not see that big of difference.
Maybe if I can keep your attention, I can get some more answers.
How much is a typical head/cam package for the Viper? I assume it's based on doing work to your head which means some downtime. What's the turn around for a job like that?
What are some estimated HP gains from the head/cam package alone? Estimated HP gains from head/cam ALONG WITH headers/highflow cats/exhaust?
Maybe if I can keep your attention, I can get some more answers.
Welcome JohnnyBravo! Nice pics!!
To the rest of you (who can be of some informational value to JB), please continue to ignore JB's questions, so he will continue to post more pics!! :thumb:
