what would cause this problem...

on a 96 GTS.

this is part of an edited email...

...jumped in the car and it fired right up, no problem... it seemed a little sluggish, but started non-the-less. well, when i got the major intersection the car just did not want to go. i pushed the pedal to the floor and got no additional revs from the engine!! it kept running, but at about 500 rpm's... and would not move... i turned it off, fired it back up and we took off!!

I am thinking alarm or bad battery?

Suggestions?
