ECU tuning: what is out there

Hello all;

Name is Robert Judd, owner of Gen 3 Motorsports here in Portland, Or. I've been owning and tuning Corvettes for many years, and for the last 3 years I've been a high perf installer and tuner on LS1-based vehicles, primarily C5 Vettes. The GTS/ACR has been a dream car of mine since the GTS came along in 96. I finally purchased one, a low mile pristine 1999 GTS/ACR. I love the car.

My intentions with the car are both personal and professional. I plan to carefully dissect the drivetrain to see what it is all about, with particular emphasis on ECU tuning. I have done but a cursory look for tuning software that is/isnt available for the Viper. With the LSx cars, software such as HP Tuners and LS1Edit are awesome tuning programs that offer complete access to the stock PCM for editing purposes. There is no need for expensive piggy-back systems. For $500 you have completely unlimited tuning capabilities with the stock PCM which is good for just about any level of modification. I am not finding such a software out there for Vipers, only piggy back setups that seem pricey. Am I overlooking something? I am interested in a package that I can tune many Vipers with, not something I need to dedicate to one vehicle or VIN. And also, its got to be a powerful program that gives me access to all parameters and tables, not some cheesy HPP+ programmer that tweaks 1 or 2 tables with preset values. If I have my way, I would prefer a program that not only gives me unlimited tuning access to the stock ECU, but also has a scanning program (E.G.- HP Tuners). I dont ask for much, do I !?!? Well, as soon as I get this figured out, I can begin to offer my services to the local Viper community, as well. I look forward to your input and future chats with you long time Viper owners.

Robert Judd / Gen 3 MS

If you find that tuning tool for the Viper that has unlimited capability for $500, I'd like a unicorn.

The JTEC controller has proven to be a very tough nut to crack. Good luck.

So, it seems the VEC2 is a combo piggy-back/ stand-alone setup, and seems to be the most economical way to go. who has the best price?

Re: ECU tuning: what is out there

There IS a software tool available to do the fuel maps for Vipers, but I don't think its as extensive as the tools available for Vettes. I've seen West Coast Viper on here advertising PCM re-programming, so they must have this software as well. I don't know the name or who made it, but it does exist 'cause I've seen it.

Re: ECU tuning: what is out there

I could take all day posting a reply to this thread, but to save time skip the VEC 2 and go with the AEM. If you want a VEC 2 though, I have one for sale...PM me if you have your heart set on one...

Re: ECU tuning: what is out there

I got a PM from phil on this. Here's my reply without really going indepth. Hope this helps...

Quote:
the vec is an interceptor modual for the fuel system. it requires that you take the car to a place that can tune and burn the cards for you there. the aem allows you 100% control in one box. people like the vecs because they're cheaper and work for simple applications, but aem's are complete units for tuning.

Re: ECU tuning: what is out there

This is the feedback i need. Thanks. Yah, after looking into the VEC2 a bit more, messing with the SMart Cards seems could be a bit of a pain. I dont want to fuss with that. So, the AEM is the answer, although I will give West Coast Viper a call to see what they have going on over there. Thanks for the replies.

Robert
