I've been reading the site for a while now and I've been tossing around the idea of buying a Viper as a weekend toy. Which version, Gen II or Gen III, is the better of the two to modify? Looks like the Gen IIs are currently the fastest but are the twin turbo kits for the Gen IIIs going to catch up?
Welcome to Viper Alley! Right now, if you're looking at the short term, there are naturally a lot more directly bolt-on mods for the Gen II's; they've had 10 years to be developed and produced. There are SRT TT kits running around out there and yes, they are damn fast. To be honest, it's all about your budget and what you are willing to lay down. Jason Heffner is currently the king of Viper turbo installation and he can build you absolutely whatever you want in terms of power, drivablility, and reliability in SRT or Gen II form. No doubt about it.
My advice to you is to analyze your overall preference for either body style (if $$ is no issue) and go with whatever moves you more. A TT SRT is going to be a mean motherfucker if done right, because in addition to a killer motor, you have a world-class braking system and a more refined and predictable chassis. On the other hand, a Gen II (and Gen I) is/are the definitive Viper and are still simply one of the most beautiful automobiles in existence. Either route is going to give you a badass car, for sure.
EDIT: BTW, if you do buy one of these cars as a weekend toy, take it seriously. This is a car with a steep learning curve and if you're not used to the kind of HP it makes in stock trim, it's not the car to learn on. (That is, unless you retain some self control until you learn how to roll the throttle on all types of surfaces). Too many of these cars are wrapped around poles because people get cocky and with the 900+ RWTQ of a TT Viper, you can light the stock Pilots at 140+ mph. These cars do not fuck around - just a reminder. Best of luck :thumb:.
