Manny - We have a garage with a couple Vipers in it and we have a motion spot light out there. We also lock it from the inside and unplug the opener every night. With your little stable, you may want to get a spotlight and a video camera.

First of all I think the motion sensor is an excellent start. Can you somehow have the motion sensor rigged up so not only the light goes off but it trips an audible alarm to alert you? Secondly, you sole purpose is to keep people from stealing your stuff, so having video security does not seem like it would do you much good unless you had someone monitoring it all day which you won't. I mean so you record thieves stealing your shit. Then what? Would you or the cops really be able to identify the perps on tape?

As far as getting a gun, being that this is for home security and not for use as a concealed weapon, I would suggest a 12 gauge shotgun. Get a pump since there will be less chance for it to somehow malfunction like a semi-auto. Plus the sound of you advancign a bullet into the chamber of a pump shotgun may be enough to make thieves run for the fuckin' hills!!! I bet it's hard as hell to get a pistol in Cali, so the shotgun would be the way to go. Load it alternately with buck shot and then slugs. If you're really nervous with a bunch of thugs facing you you don't have to worry much with a shotgun since using buck shot will spray pellets at a wide angle as opposed to a single bullet. Then hopefully you wing them and then follow up with a slug. That's the ticket. Then plant the knives in their hands like suggested above. If you go with a pistol do as Nate suggests and go with Hydro shocks. I use that same ammo and the air marshalls use them so bullets don't penetrate the walls of the plane, or in your case the walls of your house.

Ya focker, ya beat me to it. I agree whole heartedly and an additional benefit of the shotgun is that, while yes you need to take a safety/training course, it is much easier to use and fire than a handgun for even a novice. So if you aren't the one in fear, ie a wife or girlfriend, they can operate it more accurately.

Can I move in with you? I love Encenitas and the short drive to everything. However, what I don't like is paying a million $ to live in a 1900 sq foot house with a lot barely big enough to put a pool in the back yard? I'll pass. Actually, the city of San Marcos (where I live) has been 'trying' to pass a city name change for the area north of the Golf course -- from San Marcos to Twin Oaks Valley, separating it from the old stuff -- that would be nice as this area could then be looked at as a very exclusive home site (although far away from things, like Rancho Santa Fe are.) They're building $1.5MM homes right next to us (other side of wall) so values should start looking real good. Houses in my neighborhood are all 7 figires now.

What we need is for our Home owners association to rip out the stupid electronic key code box and put in a real security twoer there with a guy that checks people in and out. You don't live there, you give up your drivers licesne and given a big pass to bring in -- return the pass to get your drivers license. This is how it is at the Las Vegas property I just picked up.

Manny

Many good ideas here so I'm not sure mine will mean a thing. On my old garage I installed a sliding bar that mounts to the wall, there is then another bar on the garage itself that this bar slides into. This system looks kind of like an old castle door lock except it works on only one side. You can then use a lock as well so if people get in the garage they would have to have a bolt cutter to open. Very simple. I have seen code breakers in operation. I have a friend who built one and showed me how it works. He's a security consultant. All he did was point the box at my garage, pressed 2 buttons at once and held them. Within 1 minute it opened the door. He also showed me another gizmo that unarmed the dodge factory alarm in about 3 minutes, but it would not un-arm the secondary Clifford I had because the Clifford was to new.
He is the one that said I should install the sliding bar gizmo. He also stated that one of the best "anti-jack" systems is the one that slides on the pedals and makes the car un-drivable (almost). After all the gizmo's he has installed he also states that people have become too reliant on electronic devices. If it's electronic, there is someone out there trying to crack it. Thieves can be lazy and dumb. When they see something metal attached to your cars pedals that can only be hacked off with a battery operated saw, most will move on because of the time and noise factor. If they point the gizmo at a garage door and it does not open in a period time they want, they are gone. If they see that it unlocked the garage door but there was something else making it so it would not open, they will leave thinking that the owner knows his shit and may be in the garage with a benelli. MOST WILL LEAVE, but if they want it and they are good, they will get it.
Good luck.
PS the above works great for me becuase I do not drive the viper or the Porsche except on the weekends. So I install all my "metal" devices, pull the fuse to start the porsche and arm the hell out of the viper. The viper also has a hi-jax system that if the car is started it will run until the brake is applied and then shut all power to car. By that time with how loud my car is I'll be blasting shots into the air to scare the fuckers off. I have some serious fire power in my house. Ever heard of a street sweeper?
