Not necessarily. Mine was making a helluva noise from a relatively small amount of spalling that didn't produce a lot of metal shavings. Was the pinion nut torqued properly? Overtorqueing from the factory caused a lot of bearings to fail prematurely.

If the noise changes with the speed of the car but not when you shift gears then it is likely the diff not the tranny. When my pinion bearing went out it has some tiny spots on the outer race. That is all. No gernading amounts of metal in the oil. Just noisy.

Pretty sure its the diff. Changed the fluid in it to amsoil 75 140 severe gear and it quieted it down a lot for the first 30 minutes of driving and then slowly came back, But still isnt quite as loud as it was before...
