So.....are there any concerns with running previously enjoyed gears? The 98-04 Grand cherokee came with 3:73 Dana/Spicer 44HD w-7/16 Bolts. Can I bypass the heat/cycle and break-in process by utilizing used factory gears?

"Experts" will advise against it... but if you set them up right, they'll be ok. Check pattern on them in the Grand Cherokee first, then get it as close to same when setting up in the car. I have 4.10s in a Mustang; got them out of an Explorer...set backlash and pinion depth myself. Been silent and flawless for many years.

The carrier and gears are the same for Viper, ZJ/WJ (rear) and Corvette. At least that's what I read when I built my 3.55. I would have no issues with used gears IF the wear pattern looked good and they weren't purple burnt or anything. No break in required as far as I'm concerned.

x2 as long as the gears are in good shape you can use them.

In fact... I just bought a 3.73 set for $62.50 shipped. I have enough diff parts laying around to build one "good enough" to see how I like them.

There's another if anyone else is interested.

The break-in procedure is to harden the gears. Properly broken in gear sets do not require this step again.

Wait... You're supposed to break them in? I missed the "in" at the end of that sentence.
