Jr, we use to do a lot of landscaping on Boca Grande aprox 12-15 years ago. It just got to far to travel to do work....it would take us aprox. 1 hour to drive there in non season and 2 hours to drive there during season...1/2 day was sent in travel. Although we did many large estates in the days,it was not be cost effective any more.
My late Aunt and Uncle lived on Boca Grande for 20 years, they lived on "Dam if I know Street" which was next to " Dam if I care street", at east side of island, south of the "Pink Elephant" bar. My Uncle was a Very Serious Tarpon fisherman, my family went out many times in his trawler fishing in the pass at "The Tarpon capital of the world". I have not been down in 5-6 years...since my Aunt and Uncle passed away.
Although we spent a weekend with friends on Gasprilla island, that is another very interesting island ...no cars everyone drives golf carts. As legend goes, Jimmy Buffet "Cheeseburger in Paradise was written about the burgers at Cabbage Key ...next to Boca Grande and Gasprilla island.

A friend of mine when I was racing skip barber invited me down to their family winter vacation house on Boca Grande. We were at the finals at Sebring and spent a couple extra days at their winter getaway. I already knew he was of the Dupont heritage but didn't realize the history or connections to Boca. I guess they owned the whole island back in the day and they had built the original railroad from the east coast directly into Boca. While I was looking at all the pictures in the house of people shaking hands with Reagan, Bush Sr. and all the family pics I had to pinch myself and wonder about where I was. Great people, great stories, funny neihbors that some might compare to Thurston Howell on G's island.
You know how sometimes "It's a small world"? Just wondered if your family ties with Florida maybe were crossing the same paths? :thumb:
Jr...You have to ask him if he remembers Mr. Engleheart he would be a neighbor a couple doors to the south....if your friend was the person that I am thinking of that lived on the Gulf. We installed a orange and pink grapefruit grove for the Engleheart's.
The old Boca Grande that I knew was full of many eclectic and eccentric people and everyone knew everyone's business.
Many Presidents and dignitary's vacationed and lived on the island...... primarily because of their love of the best sport fish in the world ....the tarpon. It was a who's who of millionaires and billionaires but none ever dressed the part or played the part. It also was a island full of NUTS too. But also many down to earth people who acted and wanted to be treated as a average Joe.
