160mph in the straights and some good Viper racing action.

Couple of things to take into consideration when watching this:

The Viper is so loud I can't hear my navigator whatsover.
I overslowed many of the hills and turns because I didn't know what was on the other side.
Watch the point just after we hit the bird and you will see a late reaction flinch.
You can hear the car get "light" over some of the rollers

That actually looks like a lot more fun that Silver State.

Re: 2003 Sandhills Open Road Race Video - South leg 26.5 miles

The road is serious fun, the people running the event are awesome, included with the standing mile make it a very unique weekend.

There's been about 8 entries since they opened the unlimited class last year. Everyone including some Silver State favorites have backed down. The last 2 years there's been only 2 slightly crazy Viper drivers that have tackled it.

Ron Adee and myself.

Ron has ran it in a modified Dodge Ram racetruck both years. This year Ron would have bumped up the pace we set last year by 5 - 8 mph, but He cut a tire 2 miles from the finish. He still surpassed our avg. mph from last year by a little less than 1 mph. He told me he was running 180mph in the straights. That's putting it on the edge for the condition the road is in and he said he wanted more I figured with a different gear 180mph would suffice in the straights, but you better know exactly where the deviations are if your going to push it farther Everyone backed out of the unlimited class this year also. Lotsa talkers, no walkers. Ron and I laughed that we must have screws loose

The road has a 140-150mph avg in it. If they ever paved it nice and smooth, an older Indy car, or LMP type car would make it a total rollercoaster ride ducking birds, grasshoppers and waving at the cows going 200+ in the straights.

I have some pics of a Vette that lost it in the 120mph class. I'll post em later

Re: 2003 Sandhills Open Road Race Video - South leg 26.5 miles

Mike,

We were running brand new Michelin Pilot's. I think Ron Adee was running slicks this year. That road is like a raised heavy grit sandpaper. I thought about running it with slicks, but Ron confirmed to me that it's out of the question now.

Here's the Vette from 2002 that was running in the 120mph class. They can go 140mph top speed, but if they try to go over it they will be banned and told not to come back. Safety and rules.

I heard they were picking up pieces of the Vette in cow shit for hours. So happens the farmer that isn't fond of the race owns the field where the Vette is resting. Miraculously the driver was OK.

The Busch car that was going to be in the unlimited class for 2004 but opted for the 120mph class

Jay,

The standing mile runs were the day before this picture was taken and we had already put the Stryker TT in the transporter. This was the ORR group. The Stryker 650 is one back and to the left from Ron Adees' red white and blue racetruck.

We have a private group that's going to rent Gingerman the first or second week in Oct. You should make this one if you can

Props to any person that can sit in the passenger seat and call (scream) oncoming conditions! That takes kahones to sit there, look down at notes and read...all at 160 MPH!

Looks like great fun...but dayum, that is a LOT of road to marshall (or not).

:thumb: :thumb: Dave would appreciate your comments. He's a good friend and we both have been comfortable with each others driving for many years. Racing on the Eisenhower to Chicago many nights back when state troopers only had marked cars.

We took a trip 3 weeks before the race to study the road, write notes, take video and build a game plan. Creating our plan was based around rally principles and note taking. We took the video of the road, copied it to DVD and watched it 2x speed on a laptop while Dave called out the pace notes. It was very difficult getting the rhythm down and all it takes is losing your place ONCE on the note pages and a // brake after sign, into R 3 kink, quick left 4, 125 could be missed and we would end up looking like the pictures of the Vette. We were still watching the laptop studying the road at 2am the night before the race. Dave deserves huge credit for attempting and accomplishing being a rookie wingman knowing very well our lives are on the line and the map is in his hands. I studied the DVD feverously on my own, but memorizing it is impossible. I always told Dave that if I didn’t feel comfortable with hearing the confidence in the rhythm of the notes that I would drive it for what I could remember from studying it and what I could see in front of us when actually running the road. We had concerned pressure from all the marshalls at the event because it was the first time they had an unlimited class on the road. They were nervous about us. They kept asking us to be safe and wondered all the time about how we studied for the road and what we were using for notes. We hid everything and showed nobody our notes or how we dissected the road while acting like we had nothing. We kept telling all the marshals “Oh it’s no big deal, were just going to go balls out on a country joyride” They kept getting more and more nervous about us. Little did they know how serious we really were or how much we studied. It was a fun game and when the race was over they knew we weren’t just a couple of cowboys.

At the start of the race we could hear each other loud and clear through the helmets communication while at idle. Dave has never navigated for anything like this and I could hear his breathing becoming nervous and stepped up. I laughed and said “C’mon Dave! Breath in…….Breath out……Ooooohhhhhhmmmmmm……center yourself grasshopper” After we left the start all I could hear was the muffled attempts at Dave screaming the notes. At that point everything we planned was thrown out the window and it pretty much became that balls out country joyride. :thumb:
