A few questions on SC viper motors.....

My brother-in-law has purchased a srt-10 truck which come with the viper motor and he is looking to supercharge it...Someone told him that the entire engine needs built to even handle boost..Now im not familiar with the viper motors so this is all new to me, im in charge of research...Now i see that they make superchargers for them but can you just bolt them on and tune? or does a complete bottem end build have to be done to handle the SC....Hopefully you guys can give me some good insight into the SC viper motor world....thanks!

The Ram SRT-10 has the new Viper engine in it -- the "Gen III" engine. Forced induction products for that engine (in the Viper SRT-10) are under active development by a bunch of people right now, and I've seen a few posts here with some of those guys saying they've gotten some trucks in their shops, but I don't recall seeing anyone presenting finished products yet.

Yeah - that's right, stock bottom is best, none of this blueprint BS, just bolt on what Fred, George and Harry said and go hard. The rest of us - well, we're all just wankers

Read who posted this thread - he's already made 925rwhp on a stock engine - that's a record, but he knows it's a time bomb and is doing the sensible thing.

Over 900rwhp on a stock crank and you call BS on a build up?

If you think its BS - you go make 925rwhp on your stock crank, race it often and lets talk in 12 months about what a legend it was.

The only fancy thing about the Gen 3 is the computer. There are people working right now to apply the new AEM to the Gen 3. In the meantime the engine tuning can be handled by the same technology that worked for the Gen 1 and 2 cars working alongside the factory computer. Everything else about the Gen 3 motor is just another engine to a good tuner. They make great power and respond to mods like anything else, the only mystery is BS marketing to sell you "their" solution.

Here is some info that shows the stock bottom can hold some power, but just for how long is yet to be seen.

Re: A few questions on SC viper motors.....

Jerome - correct - but there's also a few broken cranks lying around that go to show that Cinderella didn't always make it home from the ball.

By 900rwhp there seems to be a common concensus that things are getting real dicey down there, and my money would go to stengthening things up well before that. Others can do what they like, and when things eventually go pop, we'll likely not be hearing about it anyway - you know the code - next thing we'll hear is someone just decided to do an "upgrade" and leave out the bit about the body bag for the old engine

Where did the guy who started the thread say that? I'm not disagreeing with whatever you said, I'm just trying to figure out what this part of your post means.

Re: A few questions on SC viper motors.....

Violent Attack,

Going back to your original question, I believe what you've been hearing about having to rebuild the Viper motor to handle boost revolves largely around the cast vs. forged piston issue. The engine comes stock with cast pistons and the chances of burning a piston even with moderate amounts of boost is pretty high. There are several examples of this, despite what you might otherwise be told. What a lot of Viper owners are doing is replacing the cast pistons with forged ones. And if you're replacing the pistons, why not beef up the rods and main caps, etc.? (You see where this is going).

On the other hand, if your plan is to really push the limits, then Torquemonster is absolutely correct, the stock bottom end will not hold up over time with any kind of abuse and you need to plan for that.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken, the SRT-10 truck has a cast iron block. That would be one difference between the truck and the car versions that I'm aware of. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

As mentioned by others, give Jason Heffner a call (410 766-2800) to discuss this in more detail.

Re: A few questions on SC viper motors.....

The older V10 Rams (like mine) have a Gen I-style cast iron block -- they're a slow, low HP, low-end gruntwork engine, and they redline at only 4500 RPM. But it'll drag a skyscraper off it's foundations.

The Ram SRT-10 has the same aluminim block used in the Viper.

 I owe MOJO V10 an apology. My comments were aimed at his post which I THOUGHT was on the BLOWNGTS thread.... and he has got 925rwhp.... I thought he was saying BLOWNGTS didn't need to build his engine up... sorry Mate!! In the context of this thread - fair enough - you are right, it is not essential to build a motor for boost if you keep it within limits. Personally I would, but most don't and they mostly end up with great results. Sorry MOJO.

Re: A few questions on SC viper motors.....

Hennessey had a TT SRT at the Texas Viper Nationals, so that, at least, has been done. He said that the owner wanted to build the bottom end, so he was gradually turning up the boost to experiment with the outer extremes on the stock block before he did the tear down/rebuild. Based on what we saw there, it would not appear that building the bottom end is necessary, even for fairly robust boost.
