I'm going to run B&B headers and cat back with Sean's 3" oval cats. Without bothering him with a phone call, does anyone know if the cats will need to be welded in?

I plan on coating the headers with Jet-Hot or something similar, should I also reinstall the stock heat sheild for extra protection?

Re: Roe Oval cats

I welded some flanges on mine after reading about some fires/ extreme heat in the side sills while using clamps around cats (not necessarily Roes). The oval cats I had had expanded ends to fit 3 inch pipe, but the expanded portions were way too big for routine muffler clamps or band clamps to make a good seal.
Flanges will allow you to swap out cats for straight pipe if the need arises.

Because of their physical configuration they are tricky to mount without contacting the sills. My experience with them was on a 94, I'm not sure that the Gen II has the same problem.

Re: Roe Oval cats

on a side note, do you guys see problem with installing a used high flow cat - they have about 2k miles on them. I wouldn't think so unless there is a physical defect - speaking of which, how do you know if a cat is bad?? Thanks

Re: Roe Oval cats

I had mine welded in. they fit fine in the side sills and noticably cut the sill temperature.

Cats are bad when they don't pass smog, cause error codes, overheat, rattle, get clogged up.

Unless you are running some funky fuel additive, the cats should be pristine with only 2K miles on them. In normal cars, you check the cats out somewhere between 75K and 125K miles. The biggest benefit for me from adding the high flow cats was lower side sill temps.

I belive this free flow cat reigns from a car putting down close to 900rwhp... so I wonder if it's been beaten to death
