Nope, no joke. Last year I had to have a door hinge replaced, and was suggested to lube it in the future to avoid that issue (creaky, etc.), and think I'm in need of such currently. No secret anal lube joke here, sorry.

Spray white lube. But clean off the hinges of all dirt before you use it, and remove the excess lube after you use it.
What's white lube?
It is just a white colored grease that comes in a spray can or in a tub like wheel bearing grease comes in. Get it in the spray, it will come out "thin" but will thicken up after you spray it. The good brands will anyway. Shake can well before use. [img]/images/graemlins/laughing.gif[/img]
Some people use other spray lubes but they are too thin and just drip off. They have no "tac" to them. Not tacky = no sticky :doh:
If you overspray it don't worry, just wipe it off when you do it. It won't hurt the paint at all.
Use just enough to do the job and wipe off all excess. Could not be any easier.

The last time I lubed my hinges, I used some of my wife's KY Jelly !! It worked great, and stayed there a long time.....but now, my Viper smells like FISH!! Can't figure it out!!!

I used to use WD-40 but after a few weeks the hinges were creaking again. I have used some of that white "lithium grease" with good luck, and the other thing that works VERY well was motorcycle chain wax. You spray it on and it turns into a gooey, slimy waxy substance. It doesnt wash off and the spray seems to sort of work its way into the hinge and lubricate over a longer time than the WD or grease did.

Denny, that must be the reason for all those open sores around your lips. Kidding aside,BEL-RAY chain lube for dirt bike chains is also great for hinges.
