Where did the "only 2 built" figure come from? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understood, all the '96 GTS's were Indy Pace Cars. The decals came in the trunk.
500 GTS's were built and first introduced in 1996. All were blue & white. The actual Indy pace car had strobe light bars and believe it or not, a pop up sunroof.
I believe the total for '96 GTSs was over 1100. Pace car decals came with them, but not applied. A very small handful - 2 or 3 were white with blue stripes. A few others came with the white painted rims off the '96 RT.
The winner of the 500 recieves the pace car, but is it the actual pace car that was used for the race or is it just a production run pace car? The reason I ask is, was the viper with the sun roof the one that paced the race or was it a prototype?

The one with the sunroof...correct me if I'm wrong here folks....is in CAAP.
maybe only 2 GTS's saw "official duty" (they have a backup car in case one gets fucked up) Both the ones I've seen (at CAAP and the Brickyard museum) were different cars and both had sunroof cutouts as well as strobe lights all over the place and have to run goodyear tires.
I believe the winner gets a regular production pace car - but may have dibs on the S/N of the vehicle. Buddy Lazier won the '96 Indy 500 and the GTS pacecar edition.
