I noticed it was an issue with my aftermarket radiator as well. I guess I got lucky. I did replace the two fasteners JMB sent that attached the intake to the top of the radiator with wing nuts, but I don't think that willhelp your situation out any.

Actually, the size of the radiator would be of no issue.

Think about this...

The radiator fits inside of the core support. The core support being that large chuck of black plastic in the front of the car. A rigid structure. If the radiator was taller or bigger than the stock one, how would it still fit inside the core support?

The studs to mount an airbox are outside the core support, on top of it. How could their location be altered by something that must fit inside the core support? A rigid structure.

I do know that with the 4" thick Fluidyne that the airbox will have issues fitting toward the engine, as the front edge is fixed by the core support so the additional thickness goes in the limited space between it and the cross brace. But even then, nothing raises the core support higher.

Just got a tracking notice on my RF-1039 filters. They'll be in Wednesday.

And like was said, an aftermarket radiator has nothing to do with this. That is almost dumb.

I would tend to side with the assessment of the CAI fabricator on this one. You know, since he's probably made over 1000 of these and all.

Got the new filters in but not gonna have time to work with it tonight. They look like will solve the fit issue, and I am not concerned about the smaller filter area. Like I said before, if RSI can crank out 1000 hp using smaller filters than that on their TT kits, then my shit should be good.

On to radiators and JMB's and WTF's, here is the fit at the front:

At the cross brace. The tab on the cross brace is up against the JMB.

At the core support. NOT sitting on the radiator, IS sitting on the core support, and IS about 1/2" too far forward to match up with the studs.

Driver side:

Passenger side:

Pencil mark I made through the hole in the JMB:

Summary so far, IMO of things:

-> Bending the tabs at the cross brace will move the box, but not enough. The tab on the JMB needs to be cut off and relocated, and the one on the cross brace shortened. Which means the stock box would not fit again if I did that.

-> The tab at the cross brace combined with the 3 screws up front will hold the box just fine. I'll put the thumb nuts on top with some hex head screws underneath to fill the unused holes at the core support and make them look like they have purpose.

-> I do have the box clearanced so the hood will close, and I'm confident the new filters will solve the rest. I should know tomorrow. Party on Garth.

I'm assuming the one on the left is the filter you are selling and the one on the right is the new filter you will be using?

Yes, the one on the right is the anticipated fix. Gonna delay installing them until this weekend. Tonight the snake will chill and I will honor Jerome with an evening of silence at casa Dave.

***Problem Solved***

K&N RF-1039 to the rescue.

Everything still loose, right before closing hood the last inch:

Hood closed:

Even though they are ~ 20% less surface area than the ones that come with it (RF-1030), I bet they flow just as much if not more. The bigger ones are so shrouded on the sides and bottom they can't be flowing much there.

Still need to get a better color on the silver tubes and put some hole covering fasteners in the holes above the radiator to make them look right, but I think it looks good finally on the car. Way better than my ghetto look without the box lol.

Would I be too ghetto for stating that the front tips of the filters should angle a little towards each other...not for any performance reason, but it would look sexier.

Are the 1030's the original size for that setup? How much are you looking to get for them?

John, I don't think the 1030s came with the setup. Mine came straight from JMB with the more conical 1039s.Dave traded sexual favors with Tiff for his. God knows what Tiff's kind did with the filters.

A question I sent to Justin @ JMB via email a few months back:

Does the K&N RF-1030 fit both the kit for the factory intake version and the Roe blower version, with factory TB's in both cases? I have both, and am trying to see if I can get by with one spare set of filters. They look the same.

Justin's answer:

Yes they are the same

Summary:

Justin > BS99

The difference should be obvious. Compare yours to the pic where I have mine sides by side 1030 vs 1039.

No doubt Justin knows his product better than I.

I'm no K&N expert, but I did kick some ass in geometry in 9th grade and I can tell you that the filters that came with my JMB are NOT cylindrical like the 1030s are. They may not be as drastically conical as the 1039s, but they are slightly conical.

Actually they aren't conical at all. They are a frustrum, but I digress.....

The 1030's have a taper. But less than the 1039's.

So, um... They have an inverse diametrical circular proportion that relates to the square of the root in pi units plus 1.

Here's the thread I did when I got my n/a setup that I sold to tiff. Scroll down to the pic of the filters.

Drum roll... RF-1030

Which are the exact same filter that RSI put on my Roe from GIII's car.
