Bad wiper control module? How do you test it?

I know, why do I even need working wipers, I shouldn't be driving in the rain right... but here it is anyways, my drivers side wiper works perfectly, but the passenger side wiper moves inconsistently. It'll move a little, then stop for a bit, then move again, all while the drivers side is moving fine. There is a clicking noise coming from the wiper control module every time the passenger wiper moves.

I tested the wiper motor according to the shop manual and it works fine (both low and high speed). So I'm assuming it's the wiper control module, but the shop manual doesn't say how to test it. I could use some guidance here, how do I test the module? Has anyone run into this problem? Do you know where I can find a replacement module (without having to take out a 2nd mortgage)? Thanks.

To test, swap it out with one from a working vehicle.

This sounds dangerous. When functioning properly the goofy action of the Viper wiper blades come within milliseconds of colliding in an odd sequence and always make me nervous. You'd figure the engineers would build in some level of fail-safe so they never collide. I can easily see that causing the engine to explode.

I've never taken apart a Viper relay control module for wipers. But for other cars I've seen anywhere from cracked cold solder joints that need re-soldering to sticking relays, or carbon buildup on the relay contacts. Of course I'm a master at attempting to repair/recondition the existing units before purchasing new.

Has this vehicle seen ample rain? I'm guessing most don't drive their Vipers in rain. I lived in Washington for a while and constantly used my wipers and haven't seen any oddities yet.

OP... All you have to do is swap out the flux capacitors. They sell them at Autozone. Ask for the 1.21's.

Thanks for the replies, especially Dave for the beer offer... Dirtbag, the wipers have seen very minimal use in their life, so it is odd. Dirtbag, you've inspired me to open the module up and try and fix it first. Now that you mention it, the sound coming from the module could be a relay sticking... I'll let you know what i find. KNG SNK, I'll PM you once I break the module...(BTW it's a 94, forgot to mention that)

Typically, it is the odd working motor that is the good one. Getting bad signals from the other side. My guess is that your drivers side motor need to be replaced.

The modules I have are from a 99 and a 97. From the 99 I have 3 modules that came with the car. I would have to test them to find out which works. From the 97 I have 1 that does work. You would have to cross reference part number for compatibility.

Mike was right, it's the motor that seems to be working right that is the problem. I replaced the drivers side motor with a good one and the other motor started working perfectly. Thanks Mike!

Hi, Newbie where with the same problem.

94 Blue GTS hard top located in the UK ( cold wet climate )

Drivers side wiper appears to work fine, passenger side very intermittent.

So is it most likely the drivers side unit is the problem ?

And any suggestions as to who would be best to source a replacement unit from ? Again baring in mind United Kingdom

Obviously given distance involved, would like to be sure any replacement unit is fully functional so I dont end up chasing my tail

Cheers

Stevie
