96 GTS service manual misprint

Well, I've just spent the last few hours doing my ignition system. I cleaned and ohmed the wires, checked the plugs, checked cylinder and fuel rail pressures. I reinstalled the wires per the digram in the manual and started to cuss Magnecor for F-ed up wires that don't fit right. Next, I started the car and it popped, backfired and sputtered. I confirmed that all the wires were installed exactly as specified and found one pair wrong. Start the car and it STILL runs like crap. Man, am I pissed now...

Fortunately, I (like Chuck) have 2 Vipers. So, I pulled the cowl off and diagrammed the wires on the '98. They are arranged NOTHING like the manual shows. I pulled all the Magnecors back off the blue car and reinstalled them like the red one's stockers. Man, they fit like a champ now and the car runs just like it's supposed to!

I apologize now to Magnecor for all the terrible things I said about their wires and my wrath is now fully directed to the incompetent asshole who wrote, and the other asshole who supposedly proofed the text in the Dodge service manual. :bonk: If it weren't for my other car, I'd be SOL until Monday when I could get to the dealer's library of manuals or get help from someone here.

Re: 96 GTS service manual misprint

The order wasn't correct on most web pages (scans from other sources) but it was correct in my manual. I bet the order is what the old 95 order was when they printed the manuals...

Like many things Viper, the manual is a joke, half truths and vague removal/install directions that more often than not leave out critical steps that will not allow you to continue unless performed. Nice.

Changing my timing chain cover gasket for the 1st time following the manual was a joy, I'd say %50 was on the money, seat of the pants the rest!

That said Dean, when you reinstalled the wipers did you have a hell of a time getting the wiper arm to press onto the knurled wiper motor posts on each side?? Wasn't a positive feeling, just did it today. As a bit down on the 1/2 inch nut I gave a little elbow grease to the wiper arm back and forth to get it to seat. So far it seems to be biting the post, scared to turn them on. First time in the rain should be interesting........

Re: 96 GTS service manual misprint

Ryan - it doesn't take much torque at all to get the wipers properly seated on the knurling. The nuts just snug down about a quarter turn, maybe less.

Smoke - nah, I've had them on right. It's just that when I pulled them off to clean and ohm them, I didn't get them reinstalled correctly.
