How to launch Viper at Drag Strip

I have an 06 Viper with:

New Kumho SX street/track tires
Corsa track exhaust with hiflow cats
K&N filter
Computer about to be reprogrammed by DC Performance

Any suggestions on what RPM is best to Launch at drag strip for optimum ET?

How experienced are you with the car?

My opinion is to ALWAYS drive the car with the clutch. If you bog the motor you're SOL, but you can always drive the clutch.

3k rpm, clutch it out and roll into the throttle. But it all depends on your driving style.

Depends on track prep! If it is very well prepped then back into the water trap and do a nice burnout. (Burn out suggestion)Go around water traps and back into water or roll through it. Bring rpms up and drop the clutch and gently hit the brake to stay in one place for 4-5 seconds between 4000-5500rpm in 1st gear. When you are just about finished doing your burnout then let off brake and continue burnout for maybe 20ft or before the lights.

Get set in the staging lights and bring the rpms upto 3-3.5k and slip the clutch while applyiing half or 3/4 throttle for the first 30ft then hammer down. If you do not spin raise your rpm at launch, slip clutch faster, and apply full throttle sooner until you start to spin.

Good luck!

Even on a poorly prepped track YOu should be able to 60' 2.0's or maybe 1.90's. On a well prepped track you can expect 1.80's or even 1.70's.

WIth old kuhmo v700's on a pretty good track I got some 1.6x 60' times. Kuhmos are great.

What he said except beware of slipping the clutch. The stock clutches are very easy to overheat and will fail until they cool.
I release the clutch fairly quickly and feed the throttle at the same time. I have been able to cut 1.75 60 ft times with the stock runflats.

Good luck.

Do the stock clutches glaze easily?

I havent had any problems with clutch glazing or failing clutches. I have had them get hot. After I do a burnout I put the car in neutral and wait far as long as I can without delaying the other driver. I try to do my burnout first so I can wait a little longer at the line. I also stage immediately so I can let the clutch cool down after the burnout. I then slip the clutch as much as necessary with given track conditions.

I have made probably 50-75 passes down the drag strip and have had one clutch fail but it was already wore out before I went to the drag strip.

I agree with slipping the clutch and feeding the throttle.

Like a Krispy Cream doughnut freash off the line. The All Motor RT eats up and spits out stockers like sun flower seeds. However they're great for the first few runs.

Here's a few videos to help get the idea.

Yep, and several other go fast upgrades as well. Also put in a G-force, but still thinking about an auto.

Nice deal, well at the price he was oddering how could you refuse? Word on the street is G-Force is your best friend until you break something or have to send it back for repairs.
We need some Getrags in the house for someone to go after SW's 7.91@185 6 speed Supra.

And yes the in car shots are a great insite to what it's like to go 8's with a six speed, I cant imagine how violent Kevins 7.98 in car vid would be if there was one.

Well, my car has the power to do a 7.98 run, and I am 2.5 hours from a driver that can do it. so at one of these event I will try and get kevin to hop in a break my axles or rear.

That would just give me the opportunity to put ina quaife and some mark williams.

How many times must it be said that there is no magic to the Getrag? Pretty sure Garth's car would have gone 7 hundredths faster if it weighed sub 3200 with Garth in it. And you know what? It would have done it with a T56.

My first run in my Viper I rode the clutch like I do with my big block Chevy. The clutch was worthless by the time I hit 2nd gear. Another time I missed 3rd and hit 5th. I was powershifting and stayed into the accelerator. It slipped for about a second and then engaged into fifth. I could tell it was hurting and the car stunk like melting clutch. After about an hour the clutch was functioning normally but the Viper stunk for the next couple of days.
I have made about 2 dozen runs with my car which is basically stock and have managed a 11.6 @121 with the stock runflats. I launch about 3000 and let the clutch out rather aggressively.
Ranger, from z06 fame, has a website that details how to launch Z06s but it definitely applies to Vipers as well because the clutches are equal as well as the trans and weights.
