Hi,
i'm seriously considering, no i'm surely going to race a Viper GTS in an Endurance series in Europe. Question is, am i going to start from a standard GTS, lighten it and make it race ready, or do i buy a prepped GTS? I'm not considering an SRT because of budget reasons.

I'll be up against mostly Porsches GT3 etc...
Any thoughts?

I would be willing to bet to get a GTS to out perform a SRT on a track would cost upwards of $10K to $15K...so if not considering a SRT because of budget reasons you mean money is no object, go with a comp coupe
I think he meant money is an object, and he needs to keep the finances in check. I would weigh car to car to get a good feel on overall value Jerry. it isn't like there are a ton of these cars and in Europe the market has to be crazy with the currency valuations.
Well hate to say it, but your not even gonna be competing with the porsche's due to the fact that in an endurance race they will be stopping for fuel way less than you, your gonna end up stopping almost twice as much! Just ask the guy's @ Zakspeed racing in Germany they have been doing this for awhile. And they where only able to podium a few time's against the porsches. Good luck anyway's!!!
Go race prepped. Race parts go for a lot more on the shelf than they do resale on a car. Also, if someone else has spent a lot of money setting it up to go fast, on top of parts costs, that saves you even more. Find one that is doing fast times, and is well maintained and you will have a lot of fun. The Viper should be WAY cheaper than a GT3 to run. You might have to settle for podiums instead of wins as a goal, but if you want to race and money is limited, you can't go wrong wth a Viper.
Race prepped no doubt. Safety equipment alone cost in the thousands. After that there are all the cooling, suspension, brakes, engine mods. And prepped cars usually come with extras like spare wheels, tires, pads, etc.
How much were you willing to spend? If you are looking to get a basically stock GTS I might be willing to part with my tracker.
I do mean money is an object. I know racing isn't cheap and i'm willing to spend some money on it (i've been racing a porsche for a couple of years now) but i don't have the cash available to buy a competition coupe, and for me it's all about having fun, i don't necessarily need to win.
I've been on the lookout for a prepped GTS but they seem harder to come by than some of you may think. If anyone has a good address for them, i'd be happy to hear it from you.
I'd be willing to sell my 97 GTS for the right price but I have to be honest, if I were going to buy a fully prepped racer I'd take a look at that yellow 1996 for 38K.
My 97 needs a cage and a few little things to make it race prepped. But I'm willing to discuss.
The yellow one does look very good, but i'm a bit worried it's "overprepped", but i'm going to contact the seller nevertheless and see what's what.
What price were you thinking of for yours?

How is that racecar "overprepped"? Safety wise or performance?
Perhaps the guy wants a street car that he can take to the track to say he was racing? $38K for a Viper race car is very cheap, unless it is a total basket case.

Getting back to the overprepped thing, as i said, i'm looking for an endurance racer rather than a flat out highly prepped HP monster. I've known cars to be prepared so much that they didn't last a race, for me the car should be reliable to begin with.
I am not looking for a street legal car that i can take to the track, i can use my RT for that if i want to. The one i need for the endurance will be a real racecar, but i prefer one with a standard (or almost) engine.
And btw i agree that 38K for a real Viper racecar is a very good price, which makes me wonder why it hasn't been sold yet.
