I forgot which diesel mag it is, (not this one) but they have been working on a Cummins Diesel Viper.
Not sure when it will be done, but word is that it is a real tq animal.

the supra that won the texas miles shows that you dont need 2000lbft of torque. just an engine that winds up to 10k.
pfr, i've given you shit for bench racing, but since i dont have a diesel viper or a 1300rwhp supra i am guilty of making assumptions....

I think around 5K is about the highest I've seen for a diesel, but the real power is down low and mid range.
