It will do the job if you want to be able to say you have a Ferrari. Otherwise, that car has a lot of miles, probably needs a service, and is not a desirable model. It is underpowered, and if I am not mistaken, requires you to move the motor to change the oil, so the oil changes are several thousand. Go to Fchat and see what they say.

I would drill and tap a new oil plug before I would do that. Thats RETARDED.
348s normally need a belt service every 3-5yrs/20k miles (there is some debate on intervals in the Ferrari community). The belt service for a 348 runs upwards of $10k and requires removal of the engine. If an add for a Ferrari doesn't specify a recent service with receipts, it probably needs one, likely why the owner is selling.
I wouldn't even hold out for a 355 unless you are hell bent for a spider. Honestly they are pieces of shit (relative) compared to the > 360 era. Hold out for a mid mileage '99 or '00 modena, you will be a LOT happier. 360 spiders may be slightly out of your price range for now, however (see my first point).
I can't comment on the 348, but it can't be much difference than it's successor. My buddy is forever lamenting the purchase of his 355 F1, and I think he's put more into it than my snake is worth.
the 348 and 355 both have their problems. The 348 is underpowered but the engine is so much more reliable than the 355. I wanted a 355 so bad but the valve guide issues, header problems, Trans pump failures in the F1 trans killed it for me.
The 355 with full headers and tubi exhaust at 8k rpm is something else though. But at 8k for a valve guide repair, 4-6k for trans pump, etc, etc. It is not worth it.
One of my Dad's buddies had a beautiful red 98 355 Berlinetta Challenge. They were playing golf and he said 'Chris, I've talked to your son about my car, he really likes it right?' My Dad was like "Yeah, what's not to like it's beautiful" and he goes "Tell him that when he has the money one day to never buy one. It's such a fucking piece of shit."
Apparently he had some reliability issues with it, with a catalytic converter that ended up costing him 6 grand.
We had a 328 and 355 some years ago, both were crap. 328 is older so obviously it would have issues regardless (lot of little shit popping up), but the 355 was a pile of shit. One of the other things not mentioned in this thread is the glue deteriorating and interior falling apart. And I guess prices came down, but back in the day when the F1 pump would go out (which is pretty common) it was a 15K+ replacement. That was one of the changes they made to the 360 (pump being cheaper).
Ferrari does nothing for me, I don't care for any of the modern cars. Now an F-40 I'd sell both nutz for, that is a f'n Ferrari.
The 355 has numerous electrical issues. Car does sound amazing but becareful of them. The 348 isn't a bad car but it so under powered and the looks just don't do it for me. Working on the 348 to me isn't that bad compared to my 512TR.
I dunno...I like the looks and sound of the 355 GTS. I don't own one, so I have no ideas of the reliabilty issue, but if you do own one, chances are you have the where-with-all to take care of it.
