Is this new NHRA rule going to be an issue for fast street cars?

For 2008, the NHRA has put into place a rule that all vehicles that run faster than 9.99 must run an engine diaper.

My local track has posted that not only are they going to be enforcing this rule, but are going to be following a more strict interpretation at 10.99.

I don't see any feasible way to run an engine diaper on my street car. I'm thinking it will be an even bigger nightmare on a viper. I've heard conflicting information on whether most tracks are going to enforce this rule outside of certain events or certain classes.

I can see the rationale for the rule, but to me it is going to cause a serious problem for the fast street car.

Oh well, I can always run 11.0 at 35 mph

The diapers are not required for E.T cars running slower than 7.51. Only Comp class cars that run 9.99 or quicker need a diaper.

You should be fine.

Is it true that diapers are required for drivers who run in the 8's with six speeds?

That is certainly a good precaution

I believe there are even times that car owners and builders may also need them for eight second six speed passes

I would imagine that would either be a transmission blanket or sfi case/bellhousing setup. That rule was there before though.

My local track posted a correction to their website clarifying what they meant so it is not going to affect me at this point.

Quote:
Division mistake, diapers are for Advance et 7.49, Capitol Raceway only is 10.99 optional but after three oil downs which we will be keeping a log on you will pay a fine of $100.00 each oil down.

Soooo, my low 9 second/high 8 second street car is still good for now

I've seen drivers crap their pants before but never to the extent that a transmission blanket was required to hold the shit in.

This is no big deal. Just another safety device.

Our insurance is sending us a host of various things we have to address. I haven't looked over them yet as we don't hit race season till march. Tracks will vary depending on their sanctioning body. We have an outlaw class that we'll have to require the hans device for now. It's amazing how some racers will bitch about a 600.00 item that could save their life, when sitting in a 125k dollar car.

It definitely isn't cheap to comply with track safety rules.

Which reminds me, I need to get my cage re-certed

Dale Earnhardt complained about full face helmets and Hans devices at a safety meeting with NASCAR just 30 days or so before he hit the wall. Just remind your patrons about that and see if they keep bitching.

My brother was actually hired by simpson to find out what happened in that deal. He was the first non nascar person to see the car after the wreck.

With us being an 1/8th mile track we don't have nearly the regulations a 1/4 mile track does. The problem is, you can buy a worn out early 90's mustang CHEAP. You can put together a 10-12k dollar project and be running well into the 10's. It's scary what shows up at our track. Sometimes sleepers will surprise you. Faster than 7.49 requires a fire jacket in the 1/8th. Helmet is faster than 7.99 I think.

I'm sure you've seen more than me over the years, but I have definitely seen some crazy things in terms of safety equipment or, lack thereof. There are some seriously cobbled together pieces of crap that are truly very very fast.

Very true about the sleepers. I coasted to a 9.91 at 111 in the 1/4 when I first moved to the east coast. 17 inch tires, driven to the track, stock hood, only a 6 point and no nhra license. I only got warned not to do it again, but told it would be just fine to run it out the back door at the end of the day.

I have all the required equipment now, but there are plenty of people who don't.
