I got a 63" plasma TV and it weights about 180lbs. Pretty heavy. My question is this...I have a wall mount for it and the way you mount it is by screwing the bracket to the studs of the wall. Can a few studs hold this weight? Does the weight pull from the wall or does it push down on the studs? It seems like an aweful lot of weight. To give you an idea of how big it is, my brother is standing next to it. Right now it's standing on a small bench.

I hate to rain on your parade...but I hope you bought a warranty on that thing. Those things were fucking disasters for us. I talked to a U.S. engineer (did failure analysis for the U.S. market) for Phillips who basically told me to instruct people not to buy them. Said the cooling is screwed up and they are almost guaranteed to fail prematurely. If you can take it back, I would. I am not saying this to be a dick...just give ya a heads up.
As per mounting it: As long as the mount is designed for the size TV you have (usually approximated by a inches rating), I wouldn't worry about it. I have hung on a mount hanging on two studs that was able to extend two feet off the wall. It handled all 170 pounds of me at 2 feet (340 Ib-ft).
really is it that bad? I read good reviews on it. I bought it new and sold my 61" projection tv so I basically got it for right at $1750.00, I thought Phillips was considered a good Plasma TV. I am going to stay with the same size, but what do you recommend if I decide to return it? Did you own a bunch of these TVs?

I didn't own, but I probably sold 15-20 Plasmas a week when I worked at Circuit City. Phillips has all sorts of quality issues including designing a new Compact Disc Transport (the drive itself) marketed towards the uber-upper echelon companies making $20k CD players. Well, several companies used it and when they started failing at 9 months and there was no fix at all, those companies were rather embarrassed to say that they couldn't fix it and they would have to buy it back. I can honestly say I don't think more than 15-20% of Phillips I sold DIDN'T come back malfunctioning. I am a big proponent of Panasonic plasmas as well as Pioneer's. Samsungs were pretty good when I sold them, but I heard a few negative rumbles recently about their newest crop, so I would do my research about them. I am sure tower on this board could give some suggestions, as he is quite knowledgeable in this area as well.
I did a google search on the Phillips and this particular model and could not fine anything bad on it. Now I am curious. I am impressed with the picture quality on it. But anything was better than my projection tv.
I bought a phillips Plasma 3 years ago and it is the biggest pile of crap I have ever owned. It gets so hot that it actually heats up my office several degrees.
My Pioneer Elite and Panasonic Plasmas are awesome.
All my TV's are hanging on the walls, and have no problems. My Pioneer Elite is the 61" heavy ass model, and it is just fine.

How many studs in the wall are you using to hand your TV?
I have a good friend who is the Gen. manager for the largest TV and Appliance dealer in AZ.....he said "NEVER buy a Phillips flat screen TV.!" They don't even sell them in their stores because of all the failures, and the problems with service after the sale! I'm not trying to be a dick either......but while you have the chance...take it back! I have 2 LG's (42" and a 50") and they have been GREAT......the same guy recommended them to me and he says they have performed the best along with the Panasonic's, with virtually NO issues.

The LG's aren't that bad...you can get pretty decent deals on them too.
To answer your question, yes 2 studs will work fine.
BTW, Philips = poop.
When they work, they look great. But, that's only when they work. For the money, either LG or Samsung. For all out kick-ass performance with no regard to price, I'd have to say Pioneer.

You got a 63" plasma for $1,750..........keep it.
Are there better sets out there, sure.........but for 3 to 4 times the cost.
You buy a Diablo.....and almost immediately have the engine/trans out. Believe you built a custom stand for that engine too. Powder-coat and pollish everything to withing an inch of its live (mainly on your own at home). You made custom tools to remove various parts off the engine.
Then-
You buy a 512TR
Again in a few weeks have the engine out to "fix a noisy bearing on a pully" and proceed to build an engine stand, again polish and coat or "clean" everything to within a 1/2 inch of its life.
Now you have to ask about putting 4 screws in a wall???????????
I believe everyone is on my side when I say.....So disappointing!!!
Just kiddin, had to bust your balls.

Order it by phone and it will be $3g shipped to your door with stand (after the $100 back)
That's a very nice TV. I was comparing that to the 70" Sony when I was shopping. Side by side, the pictures were very close, but I found the color representation to be more accurate on the Sony, so that is what I went with, even though it was more expensive and a little smaller.
