Portal axle obsession

I know a couple of you are into 4x4's like myself but I've just realized in the last year or so that i have an obsession with the portal axle systems.. So much so that all the 4x4's i own have portal axles. The increase in ground clearance and reduction of stress on the axles themselves is awesome. I've also gotten to the point where every 4wd I own either has limited slip or lockers all the way around.

Anyways.. my lil collection of beaters:

Not the prettiest but the functionality is there

I'm not familiar with the term "portal" as used in this context. I know that our 'Mog had a unique wheel-end axle arrangement. It was like a drop-center offset flange that put the wheel center about 4" lower than the axle shaft. I would assume that the drive was through spur gearing.

Am I on the right track here?

Correct Dean,
The axle shaft feeds into the top of the hub which is a gear reduction unit
I am assuming your mog is for construction?

Nice collection!! I thought about putting portals under my TJ, but the Dana 60s are holding up well for now.

I kept tearing up halfshafts on my H1 when I had it....but it still was a hell of a truck!!

No, it was a ranch vehicle for going anywhere/everywhere on the place we had in the Davis Mountains of west Texas. It stayed with the sale.
