First of all if u are an individual that believes one should pay sales tax on every purchase then please save me the lecture huh.
i recently managed to save the sales tax on 2 higher purchases this year
Last month i purchased a 2003 srt10 from a dealer in ohio, 244miles, 59990k, car was mint xcept for scratch to either underside of front but u had to be on u're knees to notice. Car also came with the red calipers.
Now the dealer wanted to handle things this way. He asked for no sales tax and he put 30 day temporary ohio tags on the car. The car was shipped by enclosed trailer . By fed ex i recieved the bill of sale. I also did fill out some paper work that i was an out of state resident for the state of ohio. Ten days later the title comes from the state of ohio with my name on it. So i amble off to my county tax collectors office with a folder that includes all the paperwork(a vin identity certificate is also required in my home state). The lady behind the counter asks "can i help u". i say " i'd like to register my out of state car please". i pull out the title and the vin identity certificate and leave the bill of sale in the folder. She takes my name, address. Then she asks for $180. She hands me 2 plates and the window sticker and says have a nice day. So i think she assumed i was a new resident to that state. Now whether the beauracratic system will catch the mistake i don't know but 6.25% on 60k is close to 4k so we'll see.
i also purchased a pioneer 6100hd plasma this year. The guy at the shop had done business with me befor when i built my house. He suggested that i use a friends address who lived across the state line. So when he ordered the tv he used the out of state address as the purchasers address. he also sold me the plasma for the same price as they go for on plasmacity.com so a good deal.

they will catch it trust me. Also if in the paper work you are speaking of ask for purchase price they will run it down. Every motor vehicle in every state that is sold reports sale price and automatic amount collected for tax. Plus there is a paper trail on all vehicles where they are (state, city) collected forms. I owned dozens of motorcycles and cars in my time trust me I hate giving money to uncle sam....
They have the systems to catch it ... But I bet they won't. Within a state, things are pretty locked down. When dealing with more than one state, the links are generally not that solid.
I was told to get my auto dealer license and then I would not have to pay sales tax on anything other than brand new vehicles. Only have to sell a couple vehicles a year...
It all comes down to this, as you had a title with your name on it, they incorrectly assumed you had paid sales tax when you registered in ohio (not that you did, but that is all that matters).
You are in the system, quietly walk away. Enjoy your car and never speak of this again.
I recently had a similar situation. I bought a new Viper from Ohio and had it shipped to Michigan. I investigated several different angles but could not find a way to avoid the tax. The DMV made a big scene when I walked in and was told I owed over $5,000 in tax.
I had the state catch a 50.00 error several years ago so I would be surprised if they don't catch yours.
When you go to register a car you have a title with the previous owners name on it, that is how they know you have never paid sales tax. As you had your name on it, you are done. End of story.
When I transferred my TT car from Arizona to Texas, I had an Arizona title with my name on it but the DMV demanded a bill of sale... just be prepared..
They did not ask for my drivers license.. Only other thing she asked for was proof of insurance. The lady just assumed i was a new resident for that state so i had already paid tax on the srt when i bought it.
What i didn't understand was why she thought if i was a new resident why i brought only one vehicle with me to register(especially a 2003 with only 240 miles). They did close at 5pm and it was 4:50pm , maybe she was ready to go home huh.
I knew as soon as i had an ohio title with my name on it that i had a chance to pull this off ... not only a chance but also to do it without lying... all i said was i wanted to register my out of state car... 2 minutes later i was out the door.
i had the bill of sale with me hidden in a folder but she never asked for it. i had been to this office befor in 2002 when i did actually become a new member of that state... at the time i registered 3 out of state vehicles and i was not asked for a bill of sale..
Also this office is not the dmv, it is the county tax collector, u can get u're plates here and pay other local taxes but not u're drivers license
o plumcray i need u're name, address and ssn so i can send u the blackmail
rogue u can kiss my

doing the right thing usually means taking it in the ass imho.
For instance, when i was fresh out of school i took my first job.. i moved from salt lake city to california.. Prior to moving i purchased an eagle vision... So shortly after arrival to ca i went to the ca dmv... i did the right thing and stood in line for over 2 hours befor i came to the lady behind the counter... i told her i was a new resident and need to register my 2 cars... she said "o by the way .. if u register an out of state vehicle that is less than 6 weeks(she may have said 3 months) old then u have to pay the sales tax again,,, i did the right thing and paid the sales tax...AGAIN.
Something tells me i'm doing the right thing these days

You tried at least. Attaboy for that.
That's a messed up story. I can see why you have feelings of being screwed.
But alas, it's irrelevant.
I would still try to do the right thing next time too. IMO.
Another vote for doing the right thing >> Call me crazy. I have a retail dealer license in Missouri, so I can run D-tags and not pay sales tax on anything.
But the Viper is my personal car, so I paid the sales tax and put regular plates on it. It seemed a bit stupid (especially to my wife), but I sleep better that way.
That "My Name is Earl" show has me thinking about karma more than I used to :-) It also has me thinking that I wouldn't mind nailing Jamie Pressley, but that's another post.
