Actually it was Ohio State that screwed up when they issued a Title in your name without collecting tax. How did that happen? I purchased several out of state cars (new & used) and never managed to escape the tax man.

I had the opposite problem...I bought my Viper when I lived in South Carolina, where there is no sales tax on cars for me. Then I got transferred to Virginia. Everything goes well, until I try to register all my cars here. They tell me that since I bought them all within the last year, unless I can show proof that I paid sales tax to the state I am moving from, I have to pay VA sales tax on all of them. Of course, I can't show proof, since I didn't have to pay sales tax in SC. Needless to say, the Viper stays registered in SC, and I make the annual trip there to renew my registration. As an added bonus, VA can stick their front license plate up their ass.

No sales tax on cars in SC? I can't even imagine the money I would have saved the past two decades living there. NICE!
