i didn't actually look at the title that closely.. It did have my name on it and the dealer also... The car came with temporary ohio plates but the lady at the county tax office didn't know that cos the car was sitting outside.

The various states handle their vehicle registration fees differently. Some keep the revenues within the DOT/DMV as dedicated user fees to pay for road construction and maintenance. Other states put such proceeds into a General Revenue fund to pay for who knows what.
Motor fuel sales taxes are also handled in this manner. Some states keep a portion of the total tax within the transportation system, others dump to general revenue. The federal share of fuel taxes is 18.4 cents/gal on gas and 20 cents/gal on diesel. This stream is not indexed, so it suffers from buying power erosion through inflation.
Check your own state laws and make up your own mind as to whether you think the maintenance of your roads are worth paying tax on. If not, don't bitch about potholes, cracks and crumbling bridges.

i went down to the county tax office 2day and paid the tax.. They assured me that by friday all the potholes in the state will be filled in... the crumbling bridges is gonna take a little while tho...
Another vote for doing the right thing >> Call me crazy. I have a retail dealer license in Missouri, so I can run D-tags and not pay sales tax on anything.
But the Viper is my personal car, so I paid the sales tax and put regular plates on it. It seemed a bit stupid (especially to my wife), but I sleep better that way.
That "My Name is Earl" show has me thinking about karma more than I used to :-) It also has me thinking that I wouldn't mind nailing Jamie Pressley, but that's another post.

Running dealer plates on personal cars is fucking retarded. Dealer plates on car means that car is dealer inventory and if you hit anyone they can go after all the assets of the dealership. If you're set up properly your dealership and it's assets cannot be touched should you run a bunch of nuns down coming out of church one sunday afternoon.
You wouldn't believe the coincidence, I was listening to fucked up ford right when I notcied your name. Strangest things I tell ya.
Its the power of the Rev!!! However, that is amazing. Actually, I am good friends with the Rev's "Jim Heath" sister. Have been a big Rev fan for well over a decade. Nothing beats listening to his music as you hit the accelerator.
I bought my srt from texas and drove it back to california. When you buy an out of state vehicle, the dmv doesn't ask for a bill of sale. What happens is that the dmv worker asks you verbally what you paid for the car. As long as the figure is reasonable then you'll pay the sales tax on what you tell them. I personally bought my srt for 70k and told the dmv I bought it for 50k. As long as you don't say some figure that's impossible you'll pay sales tax on what you tell them. In state purchases are different where the dmv requires a bill of sale. Also, make sure you register your vehicle withing the 20 days the dmv gives to register the vehicle from when it enters california. If you pass the 20 day mark you pay a 30% penalty.
Craig, you are correct. I definitely keep the LLC and Personal separate. It's not that either are worth much money, but I don't want my kids sleeping in cardboard boxes if someone tried to sue me out of my house!
started my llc today and see what happens.. all my current cars are in my name and will probably stay that way but I am looking at a 300g toterhome and stacker trailer and saving tax on that would be pretty nice....
craig, how do you set it up to protect yourself.. there are alot of nuns in Midland....

Like Midwest said, keep the business cars under an LLC and get an umbrella policy in addition to garage insurance. If you are actually selling vehicles and people test drive them with the dealer plate you are going to want to have comp/liability on that plate as well.
Anything you drive personally, put it in your name and plate it. Yes some dealers do enjoy the perks of using a dealer plate but if something goes wrong your stuff becomes somone else's stuff.
