I had one of my buds come by the house with his new toy this weekend. A skyline R33 GT-R. Said he picked it up for 20k. It's a nice ride. I got to drive it for about a half hour or so. Real quick, here are my thoughts. There were some bolt-ons done to the car, rims, coilovers, full exhaust and intake. He said it was about 400bhp. I'd guess slightly less.
The road feel is excellent. Better than the 911 turbo (996) I drove. Brakes work just as good if not better than my stock GTS. The seats are comfy, lots of room inside the car. The car would make for an excellent daily driver. The fit and Finnish is on par with a 300ZX. The ride is firm, but not harsh however it does "crash" over large bumps. Turn in is RIGHT NOW sharp fallowed by a neutral almost over stear after turning. The engine however has loads of lag (compared to the GTS anyway). The boost doesn't start to come on until about 3500rpm. But it's not that bad once you get into the power band (6000rpm to 8000rpm) This give it a "split" personality. This maybe why I felt it had less than 400hp. Drives like a civic around town, but once in the power band it feels much like a BPU+ Supra...but with AWD. The awd system is better than my old Talon. But not as good as the Evo 8.
Highs: Great styling, fantastic AWD system, a good "everyday" sports car.
Lows: Turbo lag, peaky power band and right hand drive.
Comparable cars: BMW M3, Evo 8, Supra Turbo (BPU+).
Yes - very good cars Tanked. The R32 model is even livelier - lighter and more nimble
the R32 GTST and GTS4 would be the best value hot rod cars ever made for what you get and can achieve for the money - minor investment to get GTR + performance at much less cost. To lap the Ring under 8 minutes requires minor investment (or a stock R34GTR N) - and the car remains a full 4 seater that can be driven daily anywhere and in all conditions. There is no peer over here for the money... they are over priced in the USA - tho $20k was a good buy for a GTR.
I'm thinking of buying back the old R32 with the RB30/RB25DETT hybrid - it simply can't be compared to a anything that does not cost 10 times as much IMO. That car runs 11's and has handling that is eye popping on twisty roads - it is not just the performance but the way it delivers it. I know a modded EVO can do that (for double the cost), but they don't drive like a big block - this RB30 hybrid does - the torque is incredible with the right combo and big turbo, and the sound!! It's a different animal to a hot 4 banger, whole different experience.
Does the RB30/RB25DETT hybird use the 3.0L block and the 2.5L heads and turbo system? I'm not up to date on Skylines these days. Been playing with the viper too much What kind of hp can that combo make, what about the power band?
The R33's power band was good, it just took reving to the moon to find it. What about the R34GTR V-specII AWD system, can that be swaped into the older R32/R33's?
Tanked - yes the RB30 is a 3 liter block and you fit the 2.5 24 valve twin cam head to it. The result is a lower reving longer stroke and higher torque motor than the GTR's 2.6. But it still rpms to 7000rpm+ fine if built right - and for the street - it makes great power to around 700/750hp.
A good RB30/25 hybrid will stomp like a big block from 3000rpm - and given they have 4.11 gears - it takes no time to hit 3000rpm
After that I'd be going to the GTR RB26DETT motor. They rev to 10,000 for the 1000+hp they make fully worked.
here's an R32 running a 7 - copy/paste link - video uploaded to gallery

That's actually an R33 - the HKS demo car. The same car has ran 7.6. There's recently been a 7.94 car brought to the UK by GTCulture.

Without giving too much away to our rivals, icing on the cake includes HKS 2.8 hi-deck engine (cylinder block), HKS crank shaft, HKS special piston and HKS special conrod. Built to sustain over 1200 BHP. HKS Air shift gear box, open accelerator quick gear changes. 3240 HKS turbo's, with 3540's available to us.

And yep, the R32 GTRs are the lightest (I've got one - a snip at £6500) but the drag on them is pretty bad (cd=0.4). Mine is still a little light on boost (still 0.75bar) but is breathing well, not had it dynoed.
