Anyone ever take a rental car down to the track?

I noticed that I could rent a dodge neon for 30 bucks a day unlimited milage and was thinking damn that's a pretty good price and I could easily get my 30 bucks out of that down at the track. Plus I would like to work on my quarter miles, even if it was in a rental. Anyone ever give this a shot?

When I used to run with the JCNA at Limerock and Bridgehampton, guys used to rent camaros for a day at the track. Went pretty well for a general learning experience. I understand that some guys had a bit of explaining to do concerning how over a 3 day weekend they managed to bring the car back with virtually no tread on the tires! Other than that, and a guy who rolled one (we had to tow it about 20 miles from the track and "re-roll" it off a 2 lane into a tree, it always seemed to work prety well.

Dave Golder is the champion of rental car racing.
At the upcoming Viper/Vette/Supra shootout in San Antonio will include some roadcourse racing and from what I hear, due to some talented driving by Golder, there will be an official rental car championship division this time out!

I know a few people who've rented cars for different kinds of racing. I've seen all sorts of rentals out on the road course, and I have a friend who rented a Pontiac Grand Prix, put a 150 shot of nitrous on it, and went drag racing. I can't remember his times, but I do know that the motor had a curious noise coming from it when he turned it in. Nitrous removed, of course. My guess is that it suffered spontaneous complete self-disassembly for the next renter.

He's got crazy skills behind the wheel too! I've seen him do some mean tricks in a rental in the old parking lot of HMS. [image]http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/dday/spin.gif[/image] [image]http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/dday/spin.gif[/image]

Isn't that how the Hertz Mustangs, back in the 60's, got started?
