just picked one up today. thought at first i could never own a granny merc, but this thing is the business!! if anyone is on the fence, jump on it!
if you drive it granny, you get granny, if you drive it hard, the car will help you keep up with what it will do.
very highly engineered car. it adapts and gives you predictable feel and reactions. incredibly well rounded car.
mod orders have already begun.
I've had an E55 and it was fun car. A friend of mine has a garage full of all kind of exotics, but he still drives his old SL55 99% of the time. It's just a good, comfortable car that has a hidden attitude. Gotta love the old school exhaust note when you stand on it.

I had 2 of them. One thing to look out for is that the air shocks constantly go bad, especially if you lower it. You can have the dealer lower it for you on their Star system about 3/4", otherwise you can go aftermarket and lower it about 2". You can use links which I did on my first one. Worked fine and never had issues. My last one used a Carlsson lower module that would raise the car to optimal driving height when in motion, but would slam back down when you come to a stop. It was pretty cool, but it wears out the shocks faster, but damn that car was fun. If and when you replace the shocks at about $1K each or more, see if you can get a deal on the 030 package shocks. They are a little beefier.
Get the pulley and chip kit for another 70HP or so. I forget the brand.
Here's my old one with the Carlsson module installed, and all the trim replaced with Silver Carbon Fiber / Kevlar, including steering wheel. The black one is my first one with Links installed.
the second i got home with it i jumped online and got the links for it. it already has 20's, so it looks kind of retarded at stock height.
pulley and tune are already in the works. seems people think their tubing is made of diamonds for the car, so i am just going to make my own exhaust. havn't decided on headers yet. a simple approach will be a rear mounted tt set up.
when i first drove the car it felt laggy. after a night with it and learning how the car needs to be driven, i am very impressed. watching the top go up and down never gets old either!

Long tube headers for that car are ridiculously expensive. Eisenmann makes one of the best sounding exhausts for the 55's. They also have some nice blower cams available as well. The pulley kit really makes the car whistle.

I had 55, a few years back. Truly great engineering . Let the people talk shit but that car was smooth, fast and comfortable.
Drop the top , stomp the peddle and enjoy that beast.
Congrats
havn't really taken any yet. going to blacken out headlights and emblems, plus tint windows and lower it. will post some pics in a week once that stuff is done.
found a brabus full body kit on ebay already fitted and painted my body color. think i will kick myself if i don't get it! car already has maya 3 pieces 20's. jack ass rattle canned them though. gotta refinish them.
i just did a search also, nobody has made a coilover option for the car. from what it sounds like, the suspension is so integrated with nanny controls, no one has been able to trick the ecu to make it think it is still in control or stock.
you can move the height sensors though and the car will drop itself. or, head to dealer and they can get into comp and change the parameters of the sensors and drop it. i will do both. i like my shit low!
for what the car is, the air suspension feels great! it will never be a successful autox car due to weight, but as a touring car, it really is one of the best out there.

ya, registered over there a few days ago. eurocharged seems to be a good place with good prices. they just released an upper pulley, not just the main crank pulley. alot cheaper! they are running a tune and upper pulley sale right now for like $1000. talking with them about it.

Fuck! That's cheap. I paid around $7K for the kit I got, but that was back in 03.
wheels have brushed and clear coated inner and outer barrels. got some of the cf 3d vinyl to try it out. doing the rear window side trims in it to see what it looks like. i can barily tell they aren't cf!! very convincing stuff. btw-couldn't give a shit if you think it is gay to do it in vinyl, looks way better than faded. it is very common for the window trims to fade on a merc, so wrapped all of those in a matte black. looks identical to paint, just cheaper and no masking or disassembly. car is right close to perfect now with just a couple small scratches on front bumper.
